Man Crush Monday: August Alsina

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USFSP chapter.

It’s that time of the week again, Man Crush Monday! This week is dedicated to the very talented August Alsina. Despite his young age (he’s only 22), this New Orleans native has made his mark on the music industry.

August learned at a young age that drugs and money can make you or break you. Knowing that, he turned to Youtube in an attempt to escape his troubled home life. He posted dozens of videos of himself singing songs by artists that he looked up to, such as Musiq Soulchid and Lyfe Jennings. These videos went viral, getting millions of views in just over a month.

August was on his way to stardom when reality hit him hard. His best friend got shot and killed in Houston, Texas and just like that August vanished back to his real life.

Soon after, he got kicked out of the house by his mother. At 16, he took to the streets, selling drugs as a means of survival. Days before his 18th birthday August heard that his brother had been killed.  The death of his brother became his motivation not to become another statistic. August was determined to make something of himself, and so he turned to his music.

Now a household name, August Alsina is proof that your past doesn’t have to dictate your future.
