Campus Cutie: Kevin Ramirez

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USFSP chapter.

Meet Kevin Ramirez,  he is an interesting, french speaking, adventurer who I had the pleasure of interviewing.

What’s your major?

I am a currently a History major with a minor in French and Geospatial Sciences.

What year are you in?

I am a Junior.

How old are you?

I am 22 years old.

Are you involved on campus?

I am currently in the Airforce ROTC program through USF Tampa. I also meet with the French Club each Thursday. Although it’s not an official club I make sure to find time to pick up trash near the waterfront to keep the planet looking good.

How has your involvement helped you grow as a person?

My involvement with ROTC has definitely given me a better sense of direction. For the longest time I was never really satisfied with the path I was heading.  Prior to joining I felt as though I was simply going through the motions of my academic career and life in general. Gone are the days of waking up passed noon. Now I’m getting up at 4:30 in the morning to be at PT by 5:45, working out until 7:00, and then getting ready for class. I’m doing so much more now and finding myself more focused than when my schedule was free.

Why did you choose USFSP?

Well I attend both the St. Pete and Tampa campus, but there will always be a soft spot in my heart for St. Pete. I love the fact that the campus is right on the water to Tampa Bay. Last semester I made it my mission to take a kayak out every Friday and just sit out on the water. That time alone with just yourself and the water really gives you a better sense of perspective for the beauty of our planet.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? In 10?

It’s going to take plenty of hard work and dedication, but hopefully within 5 years time I will be a commissioned officer in the US Air Force. I’d love to work in the Intelligence career field which is a lot of readings and briefings, but it’s also about understanding different cultures and people. No matter where I find myself though I‘m going to make sure to leave the world a little bit nicer than when I came in.

What is your best quality?

I love to listen. I think listening gives you insights and perspectives from others which can help you grow tremendously.

How would you describe yourself?

I’d say I’m a pretty quiet person and don’t generally like the spotlight to be on me. It’s always great to hear someone else’s story. Which makes answering all of these questions a bit strange to be honest!

What is your favorite quote?

“If I quit now, I will soon be back to where I started. And when I started, I was desperately wishing to be where I am now.” – unknown

Do you have a hero? If so, who?

My hero would have to be my mother. She came from Mexico when she was only a little girl trying to accomplish this concept of the American Dream. It truly amazes me when I stop to think about everything she’s worked for and where she came from. After all she’s been through and the hardships she’s overcome she still continues to work selflessly for her family and for others. I hope to make her proud.
