Another year, another iPhone

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USFSP chapter.

And it is finally here….. the new iPhone 5s.

Thousands of people lined up outside of Apple stores all over the country, several hours before the launch, hoping to be the firsts, or even one of the many lucky, to get their hands on the new device.

But let’s begin with the basics…. In case you are not a big follower of the iPhones, I can break it down for you:

The first Apple iPhone ever, was the iPhone 2G. Followed by the 3G, 3GS, 4, 4S, 5 and now the 5C and 5S.

There has been an incredible amount of improvement between these generations, and apple calls their last device,

            “The most revolutionary iPhone yet”

Apple also released their alternative to he 5s, the iPhone 5c, which Apple calls, their “budget iPhone”. In five different colors, and cased in plastic, it comes equipped with IOS 7, and a slightly better camera than the previous model. Regrettably, not as efficient as the iPhone 5s, but it will meet you “half way”.

New York City’s Flagshop store, saw their biggest ever line on Friday morning. The line was 1,417 people long by 8 A.M. which also according to Munster, is 87% longer than the line for the iPhone 5 release last year, at the same location and time.

Here in Florida, fans did the same, lining up as early as 4 A.M.

“I know there will be people lined outside our doors by 4 A.M.” says AJ, a sales representative from AT&T, “As soon as we open our doors on Friday morning, it might as well be a jungle.” He says.

On the morning of the launch, Aj’s store was looking at about 60 people waiting outside of their doors, less than what AJ had anticipated. One of their costumers, Angel Rivera, explains he got there at 7:30 A.M. and was still able to get his hands on a phone.

“Once they announced that they were only carrying the space gray color iPhone, a nice chunk of people left.” Says Rivera, “I got very lucky that the Space Gray  was exactly what I was looking for.”

But many others didn’t feel like Angel, on that day…and I am one of them.

I had been awaiting the release of the iPhone 5s for months, and once I finally saw what it was about I could not WAIT to get my hands on one. I saved up my hard-earned money and scheduled an upgrade. One the day of the launch, I find out the rumor was true: Most Verizon and AT&T carriers had only gotten a limited supply of the Space Gray iPhone 5s.

Safe to say, I was heart broken. I currently have a black iPhone, and even though I considered the Space Gray, I decided not to settle for a color I would have to see everyday until my next phone. Like many others, I went into a store, and placed in my order, to find out that every order on Friday, was going to be a “Pre Back-order” meaning that my phone would not ship until October 7th. Yeah…. You can only imagine my feelings by this time.

Unlike me, hundreds were able to get their iPhones on Friday, most waiting for Apple’s opening, or from other retailers such as Target, Best Buy, Radio Shack and cellular carriers.

But its not too late for you to order your own iPhone 5s! and if you are one of those people who hate to wait, Apple and other retailers have plenty of Apple’s alternative 5c. And if you’re deciding on which model to go with, here are some prices that might help you decide:

iPhone 5s, in Gold, Silver and Space Gray….

                           16 GB – $200 with 2-year contract

                           32 GB – $300 with 2-year contract

                           64 GB – $400 with 2-year contract

iPhone 5c, in Green, Blue, Yellow, Pink, and White…

                           16 GB – $100 with 2-year contract

                           32 GB – $200 with 2-year contract
