For this week’s Campus Celeb, we sat down with USF’s very own Kyle Zimmer: Pitcher for the Diamond Dons (USF’s Baseball Team) and really just got to know him a little better. Talk about a dedicated athlete, Kyle has been playing baseball for 16 years! Apparently athleticism runs in the family as his father played ball, his mother ran track, and his brother Bradley also plays baseball for USF. Did we mention that in Baseball America’s college preseason poll, Kyle was named a second team All-American? Watch out you Big Leagues ‘cause Kyle’s coming for you!
So what does being named a second team All-American mean to you?
It’s a great honor. I appreciate it.
What do you want to do after college?
Play baseball for any team, maybe the Padres since I’ve been a fan for a while now.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself!
I have a three-legged dog named Slider. He’s part lab and part ridgeback, he’s got a Mohawk on his back.
Are you involved in any other on campus activities other than baseball and if not, do you have any interest in becoming involved?
Not right now but possibly.
What’s your favorite place to go in the city/thing to do?
There’s so much. Probably going to the Wharf, the movies, and the beach—I grew up doing a lot of surfing.
Do you ever surf at the beaches here?
Yes, but rarely since it’s so cold.
Who’s your favorite baseball player?
Cliff Lee—he plays for the Phillies.
Do you have any lucky items that you wear?
My Grandpa’s Necklace.
Do you have any special rituals that you do before playing?
Haha not really, eat a lot of food.
What’s your favorite thing to eat?
Things like steak, macaroni and cheese.
Are there any mottos or inspirational words that keep your head in the game?
AOEP…which stands for Attack On Every Pitch.
We hope you readers out there enjoyed getting to know one of our star athletes a little better! Stay tuned for next week’s campus celeb!
