How to get the Perfect Winged Eyeliner Every Time

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USFCA chapter.

Ever since I was younger, I’ve always been a makeup addict. But as the years progressed, I went from obsessing over sparkly lip gloss, to bright eyeshadow, and now finally, winged eyeliner. I’ve been a freelance makeup artist for the past two years now, yet people seem to remember me by only one thing – my iconic winged eyeliner.

People constantly ask me how my wings perfectly compliment my eye shape and how I get them to be so sharp – I’m going to let you in on the secret! Here are 4 easy hacks to create the perfect winged eyeliner every time.

1. Know your eye shape / eye lid type.

I cannot express this one enough! If you aren’t experienced with winged eyeliner or eyeliner at all, you need to know your eye shape exactly. Rounded? Almond? This is key in how you determine what style of winged eyeliner will suit you best. It’s also imperative that you note the type of eyelids you have. If your eyes are more hooded, you’ll need to be aware of this as you apply your liner. I have large rounded eyes, but they’re also very hooded. I have a lot of skin on my eyelids, so I have to keep that in mind when applying my eyeliner. If I apply the liner with my eyes closed, it’s going to look very different when you open your eyes because of all the skin on your lids.

2. Ditch the tape!

Many people think tape is the perfect way to get a sharp winged eyeliner, but I couldn’t disagree more. Not only will the tape mess up your face makeup, but even if you can get a sharp line, the line won’t be complimenting your eye shape. Using tape only sharpens the edges of your eyeliner but doesn’t make it flattering to your face.

3. Go for an angled eyeliner brush instead.

Instead of using tape or a skinny eyeliner brush, try using an angled eyeliner brush instead. It’s perfect for creating that angled wing right against your lower lash line. It’ll also help you form the actual wing, and when filling in your wing it’s perfect because the brush isn’t too skinny. The Mac 210 is perfect for this! 4. Use pointed q – tips.

To clean up and sharpen your wing, I always use pointed q- tips. You can get these from your local drugstore. These are a game changer because they clean up your wing tips nicely opposed to regular rounded q tips.

May your wings forever be even, sharp, and powerful.
