Dear Mr. Darcy: The Duke Has My Heart

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USFCA chapter.

Dearest reader,

I now have come to the conclusion that after years of wishing I had my own Mr. Darcy and countless reruns of the 2005 Pride and Prejudice, I now find myself wanting someone else. In late December of 2020, as if the world could not get any worse, Netflix decided that depressed bisexual teens could no longer escape using the amazing 2005 Pride and Prejudice film. However in a blink of an eye, a new show appeared that could grasp the heart of any Jane Austen fan – “Bridgerton.” While the series itself is based off of a book series by Julia Quinn, the television series adapts a modern twist diversifying the all white characters of the books to include a discussion of race. Though many argue the way they address this theme is  very roundabout  and does not actually touch the subject. But, that is not the point of this article, the new love of my life is.

While the idea of someone confessing their love to me soaked in rain is amazing, there is more to a person then their angst and attraction. This is where I introduce you all to the very most handsome Duke of Hastings who has captured the hearts of many across the world I’d assume. I mean, who couldn’t resist a distraught handsome guy with the body of a god with daddy issues. Like come on! Plus on top of that, he is a duke, has an amazing palace, great personality, and is someone who loves to banter. However, you would not understand what I’m talking about unless you watch “Bridgerton.”

From the scenes of him boxing to his banter with others, but most importantly the scenes of him in bed, he captured my heart. Besides the character himself, the imagery of the show is beautiful. The colors and costumes are beautiful to look at, and  the drama of “Bridgerton” is truly encapsulating. Lady Whistledown, the illusive author of a salacious high society tabloid,  leads everyone through a wild plot of scandal and steamy situations. So I plead with you dearest readers, watch this amazing show though I suggest it for those who are comfortable with sex scenes. Because these scenes are top tier quality, but not for a faint of heart.

If this ode to the Duke doesn’t sell the show to you, to all my fanfiction lovers who spend their nights binging endless stories of fake lovers, look no further for a good historic rendition of that exact situation. Each character is over the top and even the background music hits different. A handsome main love interest that beats the Darcy expectations is everything. So, my dearest reader, please watch “Bridgerton” and you’ll understand truly how amazing the Duke is. (Or at least how hot he is….)
