4 Unappreciated Shows You Can Watch on Netflix

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USFCA chapter.

Need some good shows to binge watch instead of studying for midterms? Here are four of my favorite shows that aren’t getting enough love.

The Get Down (Netflix Original)

The Get Down came out around the same time as Stranger Things so it was a bit overshadowed. It focuses on a group of teenagers who live in the South Bronx in the 1970s and how hip-hop, punk, and disco came to be in a city on the brink of destruction. It has an amazing soundtrack and, on top of that, features mostly a POC cast. It’s mostly serious but there are a few funny moments sprinkled in there.

One Day at a Time (Netflix Original)

This is another show that has a majority POC cast. It focuses on a Cuban-American family where each character gets their own growth story. It has an equal balance between humor and seriousness, some shows even making me cry. You’ll get attached to the characters and when they hurt, you’ll hurt. When they’re happy, you’ll be happy.

Dear White People (Netflix Original)

Yet another show that has a mostly POC cast. This show actually has a decent fan base, but the reason it is on this list is because there are some people who had skepticism due to the title. This show is not an attack on white people; it just addresses issues that many may not see as a big issue. It centers around a group of black college students who are making their way through a majority white university.

iZombie (CW)

This is one of my all time favorite shows. It focuses on a zombie who works in a morgue. She helps the police solve murders because when she eats a person’s brain she gets their memories and characteristics. This is cause for some pretty fun episodes as you never really know how the main character is going to act. It’s a comedy that has a good opening song and a lot of cooking scenes.
