WELLNESS WEDNESDAY: Staying Hydrated During Spring Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

In the lovely sunshine state of Florida we are exposed to the sun a lot, ladies. Especially when we are out there tanning every other day or so when the weather allows it. During spring break however, tanning time turns into every other hour of the day and before you know it 6 hours have passed by. That is when you realize that you are a little thirsty.

It is easy to forget to drink water especially we you might be sipping on a cooler with a couple of your closest friends, while walking along the shoreline. Yes, you are drinking liquid but it is really important to continue drinking water. It is known that drinking water is really good for or bodies but how? There is countless of health benefits but I will save you the trouble and give you the most important ones.

1. Helps Maintain the Balance of Body Fluids. Each of our bodies is composed of 60% water. It is preserved in your body for most bodily functions and when you are not drinking enough your body craves anything liquid. The best things to drink when you do not have water are either milk, juice, or coffee. The worst thing to do is drink alcohol. Alcohol disturbs the brain and kidney communication and cause more fluids to leave the body, which then cause dehydration. We all know spring break consists a lot of alcohol consumption so with this being said, you should carry a bottle of water around with you this week.

2. Helps Control Calories WHAT!?!? That’s right, drinking water is magical. Well….almost. When you drink water instead of another high calorie drink, it definitely keeps you dodging those calories. Using water as a weight loss strategy is quite common and does not cost any money. Water is cheaper than any other liquid and water-rich foods last longer and fill you up quicker. These foods include fruits, vegetables, broth-based soups and oatmeal. So there is a free and healthy benefit to staying hydrated.

3. Keeps Skin Looking Good It is safe to say that everyone would like clear skin. We go out and buy tons of face washes and creams that may or may not work and end up spending a fortune. It is easier to just drink a good amount of water because it flushes all your toxins out and allows the skin to absorb the nutrients that water supplies.

4. Helps Your Kidneys Our organs are very important because each one has a specific function that allows your body to do what it wants to do. The kidneys are one of the most important parts of the body and drinking water helps regulate kidney function. Too much alcohol can cause your kidneys to fail. To continue getting rid of the toxins that enter our body the kidney needs to do its job. Have you ever heard of kidney stones? Well that is a cause from not drinking enough water and it is very painful to wait for the stones to leave your body.

As you can see, water helps maintain your body at its healthiest. We are fortunate to be able to access water very easily in our country. Other places around the world are not so lucky. Most of the world is covered in water but only some of it is actually drinkable. Make an effort to bring a water bottle with you at all times so that you can enjoy your spring break and still party with your friends, but stay hydrated and healthy. If you make it a point to drink several bottle of water a day and some fruits and vegetables, your water intake will be on point!
