We Tried It: Starbucks’ Crystal Ball Frappuccino

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

Starbucks recently bestowed yet another magical, Instagrammable drink—the Crystal Ball Frappuccino. This limited-edition drink was available in stores up until March 26 and the discussion of its flavor is long overdue.

The mystical frappuccino is cream-based, infused with peach flavoring and is topped with a peach-flavored whipped cream. The marble effect is perfected through a swirl of “vibrant turquoise sparkles.” However, Starbucks claims that the real magic comes from the candy gems that are sprinkled on top of the drink. The fun in this is that out of the three different gems, you are given one based on your destiny, in which the fortune teller (in this case, the barista) decides. The blue gems foretell adventure, the green foretells luck while the purple foretells magic.

Of course, the baristas at Starbucks were not given intensive training to become psychics, and so the company states that it “does not assume liability for any luck or lack of luck that you experience,” so no promises. But on the other hand, a picture of this drink won’t cause any misfortune toward your Instagram feed.

Starbucks is known to present rather aesthetically pleasing drinks, that have a not so appealing taste. That is because these cream-based drinks mostly taste of liquid sweetener. However, in the Crystal Ball Frappuccino, the undertone of peach flavoring made for a surprisingly pleasant drink.

The beverage was similar to a very sweet, peach-flavored milk, but the gems that covered the whipped cream provided an interesting texture to the drink. The frappuccino felt like a sugar bomb, so it definitely wouldn’t be a drink someone could handle on a regular basis if it were to remain on the Starbucks menu fulltime. However, it is important to remember that the coffee chain company creates these drinks purely for aesthetics rather than taste.

The magic of Starbucks doesn’t end there. The CFO of Starbucks stated that Starbucks-lovers should look out for more limited edition drinks the company has planned for throughout the year. Whatever those beverages may be, they’re promised to be mystical.
