TV TUESDAY: ABC’s Hit Show Scandal

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.
If you are not hooked on Scandal yet, you are surely missing out! There are only two episodes left before the show takes a winter hiatus and I have no doubts it will be scandalous! Watch the preview for Thursday’s episode below. And, if you haven’t dreamed of joining the Gladiators just yet, go watch the first two seasons on Netflix or Hulu. I promise you won’t be disappointed!

Although the preview for Thursday’s episode claims it to be the midseason finale, I did some digging of my own to find out that it is not. The actual midseason finale will air on Dec. 12. This Thursday is rumored as either an individual episode or a part-one of a two episode long midseason finale. Either way, Scandal viewers should be happy to know we’ve got two more weeks instead of one before the break.

In case you need some catching up, Scandal is a political thriller and drama show that airs on ABC Thursday nights at 10 p.m. The show follows Olivia Pope, who owns a crisis management firm in Washington D.C. Originally, Olivia was the White House Communications Director, but once Fitzgerald Grant was elected president (with the help of a rigged election), Olivia left to run her own business. Olivia along with her team of Gladiators: Harrison, Abby, Huck, and Quinn, strive to repair the reputations of the nation’s elite.
Scandal may sound like the ordinary political drama show, but I assure you it is not. Olivia has an affair with the President of the United States Fitz! And yet, no matter how much Scandal wants to play up their passionate love story the fact of the matter is: Fitz is a married man with children who destroyed his own marriage while in the most power political position in the United States. But beyond Olivia and Fitz’s twisted love triangle with his wife, Millie, there is so much more going on. Powers that are stronger than even the president begin to threaten Olivia and the people she cares about most. And who would have guessed that that power would belong to someone she should care about most, but rightfully doesn’t. Throughout the three seasons, Olivia has struggled to balance her work life and love life, especially when they are constantly being intertwined.

One of the craziest parts about Scandal is that every single character has committed some form of crime. Even if Olivia works to help people in powerful positions, someone must get hurt in the process. Besides maybe First Lady Millie’s secretary, everyone has a dirty deed on their hands. From blackmail schemes to actual murder, the cast of Scandal has done some pretty bad things. But oh, how good this show is to be bad! Scandal never stops surprising its viewers with complicated plot twists and turns. I can say without hesitation that this Thursday’s episode and the following Thursday’s midseason finale will leave you wanting more. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until next year to see our Gladiators again. In the meantime, you can watch episodes from past seasons, previews of what’s to come, interviews with cast members and more on the ABC website. Follow the link here for some fun and start your countdown to Thursday night’s episode!
