It is the beginning of September and with the return of the widely-cherished pumpkin spiced latte and nearly-nice weather, one thing is clear: it is back to school season. Whether that fills you with dread or excitement about what the year will bring you, there are some things you should keep in mind before exams come hurdling their way at you like an academic serial killer.

1. Netflix, Hulu, and every other streaming service is going to seem tempting, but do your work first. I know I am nobody’s mom, but believe me when I say finishing work early is almost as great as the first spoonful in a pint of ice cream. Working under immense stress on the due date might be some people’s cup of masochistic tea, but I am willing to bet that is not true for most people.

2. Working hard and getting a good grade is an amazing feeling, but do not work yourself to death over it. If you are sacrificing basic needs over some homework assignment or project, stop! Your health, physical, mental, and emotional, is always more important than school.

3. Make friends in your classes. It may seem like a grand idea to stay quiet and comfortable in classes, I have taken that path quite a few times, but it is even better to have some new acquaintances. My closest friends know so much about me that sometimes it is nice to see people that I only ever talk to about what happened before and during class. As an added bonus, you can always ask them for notes if you ever need to miss a day.

4. You will almost definitely experience some bad days this semester. Whether it is because of a relationship problem, a wishy-washy professor, or the barista at Starbucks making your order wrong, but no matter what happens, it will be okay. You may not think so, and it may feel like everything that could go wrong is working against you, but you have made it through every single bad day you have ever had. Your track record is literally perfect. What us stopping you from kicking this day in the a**?

5. One tiny, final tip: buy a cute planner and actually use it. Do not scramble at the last minute because you forgot about an important paper. Stay organized. If you keep these tips in mind, and whatever else you have heard from loved-ones, friends, or whoever’s advice you care about, I think you will have an amazing year. Good luck and kill it!
