THROWBACK THURSDAY: Spongebob Squarepants

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

Summer is approaching, collegiettes™!

When I think of summer in Florida, I automatically think of the beach. I think of clear blue skies and sand between my toes. I can almost feel the cool, comfortable water – the perfect balance to the heat. But when I think of summer, I also think of Spongebob Squarepants!

Spongebob Squarepants is one of the only 90s Nickelodeon shows still on the air. Since the 90s, many kids and parents alike have fallen in love with the squishy, yellow sponge who lives under the sea.

Spongebob is a great show simply because it will instantly make you smile. No matter how corny the jokes or how silly the characters, fans will always take 11 minutes out of their day for some laughter.

Although almost every Spongebob episode is pretty hilarious, there are a few moments in his history that stand out to me. In no particular order, here are six great Spongebob episodes.

“Bubblestand”

In this episode, Spongebob builds a stand outside of his pineapple to sell bubble-blowing and bubble-blowing lessons for 25 cents. Spongebob teaches Patrick how to blow a bubble with a very elaborate “technique” as Squidward watches condescendingly. Squidward thinks he will be the best at bubble-blowing, but he is not. Spongebob must tthen explain his “technique” again and again by making crazy body shapes. This episode makes me appreciate the innocence in this show and how refreshing it is through the stresses of everyday life.

“Squid on Strike”

In this episode, Mr. Krabs is an unfair businessman and his workers have had enough. Co-workers Squidward and Spongebob decide to go on strike from the Krusty Krab. But once they lose their jobs, Squidward begins to think about what life will be like on strike with energetic Spongebob. My favorite part of the episode is the clip below.

“Pizza Delivery”

“Pizza Delivery” is probably one of the best classic Spongebob episodes. Just as “Bubblestand” was in the first few seasons, this episode is only the fifth episode of the first season. One night a customer calls in for a pizza delivery and Mr. Krabs, the entrepreneur he is, crafts a pizza out of Krabby patties. Squidward and Spongebob embark on the most adventurous pizza delivery ever.

“Chocolate with Nuts”

“Chocolate with Nuts” is about everyone’s favorite treat: chocolate! Spongebob and Patrick decide to become door to door chocolate bar salesmen, but can’t seem to sell without being tricked by the same con man three times. There is even a customer who spends the entire episode running after them screaming for chocolate. Don’t worry, he gets chocolate at the end of the episode! I’m sure you’ll crave some too after watching the video below.

“Rock Bottom”

In this episode, Spongebob and Patrick take the wrong bus after spending the day at Glove World. They get stuck in Rock Bottom where the fish are creepy and speak a weird language. Patrick somehow gets a bus back to Bikini Bottom, but Spongebob is stuck in perhaps the most frustrating episode ever.

“Band Geeks”

In “Band Geeks,” Squidward faces his rival from band class, Squilliam Fancyson. Squidward must teach citizens of Bikini Bottom to play in a marching band for the Bubble Bowl. This episode has quite a few hilarious scenes, but the best one is the ending.

There are plenty of other funny Spongebob episodes, but those are just a few. As summer approaches, take a nice trip to the deep blue sea and watch some Spongebob Squarepants!
