Sharing Your Success Without Sounding Arrogant

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

Throughout the four or so years we spend on our college career, we will come across many wonderful achievements. From making the Dean’s list to landing an awesome internship, or making a spot on a sports team to even losing weight. These achievements are what we pride ourselves on and what pushes us to stay determined until we reach our ultimate goal.

With social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, we immediately find ourselves eager to publish our newest achievements for friends and family and the world to see. But why do we immediately seek the need to share our accomplishments with the world? Are we looking for praise, are we bragging, or are we simply sharing our happiness with others?

How can we share our success without sounding arrogant?

1. Be grateful of your accomplishments – Not everyone has the same success as you do. Not all 50 girls trying out for the cheerleading team could be chosen. They could only choose 20 of you. Be grateful you were one of the 20 chosen and not one of the 30 who did not make it.

2. Be brief – Limit the sharing of your success. No one wants to hear you go on and on about yourself. Plus that will just make you sound arrogant.

3. Limit the achievements you share -If you list that you made the Dean’s list, became cheerleading captain, got a new car, and were promoted at work, people will assume you’re boasting. Limit yourself to sharing one or two accomplishments.

4. Avoid criticizing others – Maybe your friend is still working at Starbucks and you have been hired by the company you interned for. Don’t put your friend down for not having the same success as you. Push her to get out there and make her dreams come true.

5. Recognize other people’s accomplishments -Pay attention to what is going on in your friends’ lives. Congratulate them on their success.
