Hey everybody! This is going to be my very last blog entry for Her Campus USF, because I’m graduating this summer! Yay! I had intended to devote this entry to Firefly, the science fiction work closest to my heart.

However, after being sniped at anonymously in my comments section all semester, I think I’ll keep my love for Firefly to myself for the time being. I’d prefer not to get corrected on a subject I love so much.

So, today, I’m going to tell you what I did last night!

Last night Her Campus USF President Daylina Miller and I attended a costume/viewing party for REPO! The Genetic Opera at the Ritz in Ybor! The party started at 10 p.mm and lasted until around 2:30 a.m., when we were all promptly (though politely) kicked out.

We had an awesome time. Daylina wrote today that it was the best night of her life. While I wouldn’t go that far, I certainly had fun.

The Unworthy Heirs, who usually perform at the Tampa Pitcher Show on North Dale Mabry, did a fantastic job! I was especially impressed that the actress portraying Blind Mag appeared to actually know the words to the song “Chromaggia.” I also loved how they made Marni a real character. For those who don’t know, Marni is dead when the movie begins, but her story is told through a series of animated flashbacks. The Unworthy Heirs actually have someone portraying her on stage, a petit ballerina who dances her way through the flashbacks. Her presence really brought out the relationship between the characters in a way that the film alone could not do.

All of the performances were fantastic, but I have to give the top review to the actor playing Graverobber. Not only was his performance great, but he got the audience involved too. He did a little impromptu stand-up at the beginning of the show while the crew dealt with some technical difficulties. No one had time to be bored while we waited for the show to begin. He kept everyone preoccupied. It was awesome.

Costumes!

Last time Daylina and I attended a REPO! show we dressed as Rotti Largo’s Henchgirls. This time we decided to put more effort into our costumes, and the results were great. Daylina put a feminine twist on the Graverobber’s costume, repurposing some of her steampunk clothes along with some very fortunate thrift store findings.

She looked terrific.

I decided to go for something a little more scandalous, opting for Amber Sweet’s “Zydrate Anatomy” outfit. Let me tell you, walking down the streets in Ybor wearing THAT costume—not something I ever would have done alone. Fortunately I was accompanied by Daylina and her steel-toed combat boots.

The costume was surprisingly easy to make. I bought a pleather corseted tank from Charlotte Russe, hot-glued a pair of lace sleeves and some sequins, and added silver glitter glue. Possibly the most difficult part of the outfit was constructing Amber’s strappy skirt. It involved a lot of burning my fingers with the hot-glue gun as I tried to line up all the straps perfectly. The result was great though! I think this is my best costume yet.

To repeat, we had a blast. I can’t wait to do it again, though perhaps I’ll try out a Gentern costume next time (like the photo above!).

Well guys, I hope you have a great summer! If you need something to do, go check out The Unworthy Heirs at the Tampa Pitcher Show!
