Reasons Why Having Older Sisters are the Greatest Blessing

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

Growing up, I always wished for younger siblings. There was nothing more desirable than being the oldest, because of course age signified power in the household and also meant that you were always given the privilege of going first when it came to board games, as the oldest always goes first. Unfortunately, my parents decided they were done having more kids after me (no surprise, huh?) But now as I am nearing my twenties, I have come to love my status of the youngest in the family. And I owe this newfound love to my two older sisters who have taught me everything there is to learn about life.

  • They’re like your parents but less lame
  • They want you to be safe, but they also want you to have fun
  • They know the pressures of trying to fit in
  • Chances are, they coached at least one of your sports team
  • They know what a real college experience is like and want
  • You are super protective over each other’s hearts
  • When you say “don’t ask any questions,” they don’t challenge you
  • They are your best travel partner
  • They take you to the concerts that your parent’s wont
  • They are the only ones that will be honest with you about how you look
  • No one else will sing with you in the car they like do
  • They are always encouraging you to try new things
  • Your inside jokes that go back years
  • Your group chats get pretty crazy
  • They think they are the world’s best matchmaker
  • Your friends are her friends and visa versa
  • They are your partner in crime
  • They know you better than anyone
  • You can be in a fight one minute, and best friends the next
  • They give you the best life advice
  • No matter the distance, you can always rely on them to be there
  • They’re your voice of reason
  • You can talk to your sisters about things your parents just don’t understand
  • They understands your family dynamics and because of that you can go to them with other family problems
  • You learn from their life experiences
  • When you can’t find that one shirt, you immediately go to your sister’s closet
  • You always have multiple wardrobes to choose from
  • And when they finally have kids of their own, you think of them as your own

So thank you to my two older sisters, who have given me much more than love and joy to last a lifetime. Without you, I would not have the courage or confidence to be where I am today; I owe all my happiness to you. I love you.
