“My Favorite Murder”: A Podcast That Changed My Life

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

My Favorite Murder” is a true crime comedy podcast starring Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark. As someone who is obsessed with true crime and murder, I was immediately intrigued when my friend told me about this podcast.

Kilgariff is a comedian, writer and television producer, and Hardstark is a host for the Food Network and a podcast personality. On the podcast, the two mention that they met at a party and discussed their mutual love for true crime and how others have judged them for it. From this, “My Favorite Murder” was born.

Kilgariff and Hardstark have been recording the podcast for over a year now, and in that time they have also begun to do live shows in which they discuss murders in front of a room full of “murderinos”—a person who is interested in murders.

I started listening to this podcast shortly after it began, and I was instantly hooked. I’ve been interested in true crime since I was very young, and it was a subject I thought only my mom and I could relate on—she’s also obsessed with murder stories. I had never met anyone that shared the same passion for the topic. Hearing these two awesome, strong women talk about something I had been made to feel weird for liking, I immediately felt connected to them.

Being “obsessed” with true crime doesn’t mean I’m immune to the feelings of fear that most people associate with the thought of murder. I am a very anxious person, and fear of violence and being murdered, whether it’s an irrational fear or not, is something I’ve dealt with for a long time. I’ve found that reading about murderers or watching true crime shows growing up was a way of protecting myself. I feel that listening to this podcast empowers me and helps me deal with my fears.

I listen to the podcast every day. I often go back and replay my favorites and catch up on new episodes. It allows me to laugh and make light of something really terrifying while also thinking deeply about how murderers act and what to look out for in order to keep myself safe.

I had never really listened to podcasts before this one, so I didn’t know what to expect. The empowerment I get from this podcast every time I listen to it is exactly what I need as a woman living on her own.

From all the emails Kilgariff and Hardstark receive from fellow “murderinos,” I know I’m not the only woman who is empowered through their advice and comedy. They also receive amazing fan art, which you can find on their website. As they continue to make the podcast and tour around the world, their fanbase of empowered women only continues to grow.

There is no way I could thank them enough for helping me become more confident and for helping the voices of victims and minorities be heard. Check out “My Favorite Murder” and get to know these two awesome ladies.
