For those of you who may have been sleeping under a rock in 2012 you may have missed one of the biggest viral sensations to hit YouTube – an indie band called Walk off the Earth. This band from Burlington, Canada first came to prominence when their cover of Goyte’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” went viral. The video featured all five of the bands members – Gianni Luminati, Sarah Blackwood, Ryan Marshall, Mike “Beard Guy” Taylor and Joel Cassady – playing on one guitar at the same time. The video garnered them fans far and wide, with the video currently hitting over 140 million views and counting, and even got them a guest appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show! From their cover of Goyte’s song you can already tell this band is insanely talented as they showcase their inventive use of conventional and unconventional instruments like the guitar, ukulele and xylophones (just to name a few instruments that this talented bunch plays) in their various other music videos and covers of popular songs by artist like Adele, Maroon 5, LMFAO and Wiz Khalifa. Not only has this band been gifted with an absurd amount of talent but also the other amazing feature of this band is that they were able to independently build themselves a massive fan base, all without the help of a record label or management team. And even though they have showed that they can go it alone the band won’t have to any longer as they have just been recently signed to Columbia Records. If you want to hear more from Walk off the Earth check out their YouTube page for more covers and some of their own original music, but first give a listen to their most recent cover of Taylor Swift’s “I Knew You Were Trouble” here. Their cover of Swift’s song has been their latest video to go viral, and it even caught the attention of Taylor Swift herself who tweeted to her followers that they should check it out!
