MUSIC MONDAY: Krewella

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

If you have yet to hear about Krewella well then keep reading because this is a name you’ll be hearing a lot more of, as their song “Alive” has recently hit the airwaves. The song has been steadily climbing the charts and is bound to become the summer anthem of 2013.

Formed in 2007 the Electronic Dance Music (EDM) group from Chicago, Illinois, consisting of Yasmine Yousaf, Jahan Yousaf and Rain Man (Kris Trindl), decided to leave their academic education’s behind for good and make music their main focus. While some may have thought the trio was insane for doing so their bold decision began to pay off eventually when Krewella first started getting people’s attention with their song “Killin’ It” from their EP Play Hard, and ever since then Krewella has been on a steady climb to top. And on their way to the top Krewella have been in the company of some of Electronic’s biggest names, as they’ve shared a stage with Benny Benasi, and they have been featured on the song “Breathe” with six-time Grammy winner Skrillex, and if it couldn’t get any better for the trio they got to be apart of one of Electronic’s biggest music events: Ultra Music Festival.

Being in a genre of music dominated by males the Yousaf sisters show that they aren’t intimidated in the least, as their honey-sweet vocals shine through on their tracks, and the trios inventive use of edits and beats catapult their music to be a necessary for all club and party playlists. In an interview with Beatport, an online music store, Rain Man described Krewella’s sound as, “A schizophrenic juxtaposition of rage, femininity, power, lust, and aggression,” and then went on to explain what one would experience at Krewella’s live show saying, “The three of us currently DJ together. Our sets are predominantly original material, sprinkled with remixes and bootlegs we’ve made along with a few tracks from others that we dig. We love taking our audience on a sonic journey, ranging from electro-house, to moombahton, to dubstep, and on to drum & bass. There is an uncontrollable amount of energy within us and we use our shows as an outlet to release the passion we have for the type of music we create.”

So far Krewella has released two EP’s Play Hard and Play Harder (A Remix EP of songs from Play Hard), and currently the group is finishing up their Play Hard Tour, and staying true to their slogan “Making you wet… One song at a time” the group is hard at work finishing up their first full-length album that’s set to be released this summer in order to further keep that promise.
