Tips and Tricks to Keep the Romance Alive!
People say that doing long distance is one of the hardest things that a couple could go through. I can confirm that this belief is true.
Out of the four years that my boyfriend and I have been dating, we have been doing long distance for two and a half years so far, and plan to do at least another half a year. He goes to college in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, while I go to college in Tampa, Florida. At this point, I’m sure you’re probably thinking, “How do they make that work?” and “I don’t know if I could do that.” Well, if I’m being honest, some people can’t.
In order to make a long distance relationship work, you truly have to WANT the relationship to last. You need to be able to see a future and work toward that future. Sure, there are other aspects that allow the relationship to stand strong, but this is the number one way to secure the relationship.
Another significant aspect is trust. You have to fully trust your partner and the fact that they want to be an active participant in the relationship as well. Establishing a strong bond before we moved away encouraged a solidified understanding and trust in both my boyfriend and me.
It is important to talk with your significant other through text, phone calls, and FaceTimes. This allows you to talk about your individual days, just like any other couple would. Communication is key to a long distance relationship. It also causes you to look forward to the limited time that you have together, in our case on breaks from school.
If you believe that you want to take this route, just know that it is absolutely going to be hard, but the work you put into it will become a beautiful thing that you can one day share with your future children, if you so please.
