You have too many clothes, but nothing to wear!  Does this sound familiar?  It seems that most women face this obstacle every day, which becomes a significant struggle in the quest to be fashionable and stylish.  Of course, it isn’t hard to be fashionable as long as you follow the seasons’ trends.  The challenge is finding your own style.  With style there are no trends or rules to follow because it is completely up to you to figure out your personal style.  But before you take the leap to defining your style, you must learn how to edit your wardrobe.

Our closets need to be edited so they allow only the best possible clothes for us to choose from. It is much easier to pick out a great outfit in the morning if the choices consist of 10 fabulous pieces of clothing instead of 30 mediocre items.  It’s important to keep key items while throwing the rest away.

So if you are wondering what to clean out of your closet, get rid of it if…

It doesn’t look good on you.  Why would you keep something that didn’t make you look good?  There is no room for these items in your closet!

You never wear it.  I encounter this in my own closet.  I have so much clothing that has accumulated over the years that I don’t even wear most of it!  Chances are you still have some shirts or jeans from freshman year of high school hiding in the recesses of your closet.  Really, they need to go.

It doesn’t fit.  So many women have this problem.  They buy a smaller size jean in hopes that it will motivate them to lose weight, or they buy a bigger shirt because they think they’ll “grow into it.”  You need to buy what fits you now, in this moment, because you saw it, liked it, and picked it up at the store today.  You can buy a smaller or larger size after you reached your goal weight, but you should wear nice clothes that fit in the meantime.  So buy the right size and feel great!

You just don’t like it.  Maybe you got it on super sale.  Maybe you paid way too much for it.  Maybe you really loved it once upon a time but grew to loathe it.  I don’t know, but if you don’t like it anymore just do away with it!  Hand it down to your little sister, donate it to Goodwill, or throw it away.  It’s not like you need it.  Someone else will put it to better use.

Although there could be many more guidelines for editing your wardrobe, these are some of the most important rules to follow.  And you don’t necessarily have to do the editing on your own.  Invite a friend over as backup, one who isn’t afraid to tell you that your outfit is U-G-L-Y.  Remember, there is an upside to all of this!  Once you clean out your closet, you might have to replace some of it.  I suggest investing in classy, chic, timeless staples.  At first you may think white buttons downs and little black dresses are boring, but with accessories and personality, your personal style with transform it into something unique.
