Happy Veterans Day collegiettes™!
Monday, Nov. 11 marks Veterans Day, a United States federal holiday to honor people who have served in various armed forces. Although some people may get confused about Veterans Day and Memorial Day, there is a clear cut difference. Memorial Day, May 26, is a day of remembering the men and women who have died while serving in the armed forces. But Veterans Day is about celebrating all members of the military, especially veterans, who have served in any war throughout U.S. history.
A historical fact about Veterans Day is that it also marks the anniversary of the end of World War I. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, the Armistice was signed which ended the hostilities between the Allied nations and Germany. Armistice Day was originally created in 1938 to honor veterans of World War I. But in 1954, Congress and President Eisenhower changed it to Veterans Day to honor all veterans no matter when they had served.
All over the country, schools and businesses are closed in honor of Veterans Day and here at USF we are no different. There are no classes and most offices are closed on campus for the day. Plus, Veterans Day features many parades and celebrations.
Check out the following events at USF this year to celebrate military veterans.

Even if you don’t attend any of the events this week, USF students and faculty should feel very proud of their school. USF is now ranked #4 in the USA for 2013’s Best College for Veterans! So wherever you spend the day, be grateful to the veterans who have risked their lives for the good of the people by serving in various armed forces. Veterans Day is in place to honor all service members for their patriotism, service and sacrifice for our country and we should definitely take some time out today to do just that.
