Five Ways to Keep Your New Year’s Resolution

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

Remember that promise you made yourself a week ago? The one you called your New Year’s resolution? Well, even if you have already given up on it, it’s not too late to get back on track. After all, what is the point of making a promise to yourself that you can’t keep? Her Campus USF has the lowdown on how to put your resolution back into action.

1. Write it down

How can you forget a resolution you made if it is staring you in the face every day? You can’t! So, write out your goal somewhere you are always going to see it. That may mean on every page of your planner or on multiple sticky notes placed around your dorm or apartment. Either way, if you see your goal in writing every day, you will be reminded of why you made it in the first place.

2. Ask a friend to hold you accountable

You know how it’s harder to skip the gym at 6 in the morning when you have a gym buddy waiting for you? It works the same way when a friend is holding you accountable for your resolution. If your friend is depending on you, you’re less likely to skip the gym, eat the whole pan of brownies or slack on your first homework assignments of the semester. Whether your resolution is to get a 4.0 in your classes this semester or hit the gym more often, you will surely get it done if your friend is making sure you aren’t being a slacker.

3. Set your password to remind you of your resolution

Every time you turn on your computer, log in to Facebook or check your grades on Canvas, you are required to enter a password. Make a password that will remind you of your New Year’s resolution every time you type it in. If you are trying to live healthier try something like: f!tf0rlif3. If your resolution is to do better in your classes try something like: g3tgo0dgrad3s. It may look silly, but it will fulfill the “strong password” requirement and remind you to keep up your resolution all year long.

4. Reward yourself along the way

Your big goal may be to lose 50 lbs, but reward yourself every time you lose 5 lbs or feel your clothes getting looser. By having something small to look forward to en route to your big goal, you are more likely to proceed. But make sure your rewards to yourself aren’t counteractive of your goal. Don’t treat yourself to an expensive purse if your goal is to save money or to a week of not studying if you are trying to do better in school.

5. Share your resolution publicly

You know that fitness and health blogger you follow on Facebook? Well, part of her weightless journey success was probably because she made it public. You, too, can make a Facebook, Twitter or blog to track your success. Now, not only do you have that friend holding you accountable, but your family and possibly some unknown readers also. Your success could mean their success and that alone is enough to make you want to do well. For some awesome motivation for healthy living, like “Eat run lift repeat”on Facebook!

Now that you know Her Campus USF’s tips for keeping your New Year’s resolution, you have no reason to fail. Follow these five guidelines and you are sure to succeed. Let us know how it is going in the comments below!
