FIFA World Cup Fashion

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

Hello ladies!

There are two things I am quite excited about right now: the fact that it’s officially summer and that the World Cup is on! I’m Brazilian and even though I’m not such a big soccer fan as many Brazilians are, I have been watching almost every game. I’ll admit this World Cup has been quite interesting and fun to watch!

Not everything about it has been so fun though. The social problems Brazil has been suffering and the many controversies surrounding the cup are still happening. But no matter what, the festive and happy feeling that invades Brazil and the world during this season is undeniable.

I’m loving the World Cup related commercials and videos and the fact that Brazil is on TV and all over social media. I’m also loving to see the fashion related to this colorful and cultural event.

Growing up, my favorite thing about the Word Cup was being able to wear excessive amounts of bright green and yellow glittered nail polish and that being fashionable! Because I mean, what other event allows you to wear bright colors from head to toe, paint your face and even hair in unconventional colors and wear soccer socks with flip-flops? What other event screams neon nail polish and t-shirts are socially acceptable in a public space?!

I love to see people dressing up to cheer for their teams, painted from head to toe with the colors of their countries. But the cool thing is that you don’t have to go overboard to support your team with what you wear. Here are some ideas I have seen growing up in a culture mad about soccer and the World Cup:

1. Just add color. You don’t have to wear a soccer jersey to dress up for the World Cup. Simply put on a shirt, dress or skirt with the colors of your team and you’re good to go! It’s always an option to wear different shades of the colors of the country you’re cheering for. Using Brazil as an example, instead of wearing the bright green and yellow, pick softer tones of those colors. They still allude to Brazil, but without being too obvious.

2. It’s all in the details. If you don’t have outfits in the colors of your team or if you prefer to keep your outfit more basic, invest in accessories. Pick a bright red purse for the USA, a green pair of heels for Mexico or a blue hat for Argentina (it’s summer after all). And don’t forget the nail polish! It was fun as a kid and it’s fun as a grown up to have colorful and glittery nails (you know it’s true).

3. Show off your soccer love! If you’re just plain passionate about soccer and the World Cup, don’t be ashamed to show it off in your outfit! Wear your soccer jersey or an “I love soccer” t-shirt and show your love for the most popular sport in the world. Ultimately just have fun when you dress up during the World Cup. It only comes around every four years, so you might as well have some fun getting all colorful to cheer your team to victory!
