Feminine Friday: Emma Watson Beyond “Harry Potter”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

We all know Emma Watson from her days playing Hermione in the Harry Potter movies. But outside of the fantasy world of Hogwarts, Emma Watson is a woman who is very much in touch with reality and important world issues.

This spring, Watson graduated from the Ivy League Brown University in Rhode Island with an English literature degree. Soon after that, she was named a U.N. Women Goodwill Ambassador, an amazing achievement for a young woman.

This summer, in a speech at the U.N. headquarters in NY, she announced a campaign called “HeForShe”, urging men to join women and take action against gender inequality, since as she mentioned it’s not just a woman’s issue. Many famous men, such as Matthew Lewis, Russell Crown and Chris Colfer have already shown support on social media for the #HeForShe campaign.

Watson said loud and proud in her speech that fact the she does identifies herself as a feminist. Because of the many controversies surrounding the meaning and definition of a “feminist”, she made it clear that it does not mean to be a “man hater”, but to seek equality of the genders. You can watch Watson’s complete speech here.

Emma Watson has definitely become a woman who is defined by much more than her fame as a young actress, but who is clearly passionate about important issues of our day. Despite being young, she is not afraid to stand tall and speak up for what she believes, and that is what I believe is Watson’s real magical power.
