FASHION FRIDAY: How to Rock the Crop Top

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

Show some skin this season with an on-trend crop top! This late 90’s trend started up again over the summer and is still going strong even as we approach the fall. If you’re not eager to show off your stomach, don’t worry, there are plenty of ways to wear a crop top without exposing too much. Crop tops look best with high-waisted shorts or pants and maxi or midi skirts. They can also be paired with a regular skirt or leggings if you dare to make a fashion statement or just want to show off your perfect pack after working out in the gym.

The key to finding an ideal crop top is knowing the right length appropriate for your body. Pay attention to the length of your torso when picking out crop tops. Also consider your torso in relation to the length of your legs when pairing crop tops with high-waisted clothing so you don’t shorten your body. Look for colors and patterns you personally like, as well as a length that you are comfortable with. It is fun to follow trends, but don’t stray so far from your own sense of style in order to fit into this season’s fashion find.

I myself was hesitant to try out this trend, but I’m glad I did. I purchased a black and white polka dot crop top from Forever 21 and paired it with black high-waisted shorts so barely any skin shows. You can purchase a crop top for a decent price at Charlotte Russe; their crop tops usually start at only $5. You can also get a crop top from Pacsun or Windsor. These stores and others have many styles to choose from such as tank, strapless, halter, sleeveless, short or long sleeves as well as solid colors or pretty patterns.

Tribal, stripes, floral, and cheetah are popular prints for crop tops. Depending on the color, they can easily be put together with denim or colored high-waisted shorts. Pattern crop tops also look good with solid skirts. For example, a solid midi or maxi skirt fashioned with a stylish skinny belt is an easy way to achieve a lovely look. You can do the reverse with a patterned short, pant, or skirt and a solid crop top. On top of various designs and colors, many crop tops have cutouts like a heart in the back or slits on the sides. Try them on in the stores before purchasing so you can figure out what you’re most comfortable in.

No matter what you pair with your crop top, your shoes and accessories will definitely tie your whole outfit together. Slip into some comfortable sneakers, sandals, ankle booties, heels or pumps. Add either stud earrings and a statement necklace, or dangling earrings with a small, simple necklace. Plus pile on a stack of bracelets and midi rings to complete the look.
