FASHION FRIDAY: Golden Globes Fashion Review

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

Award season has officially begun and the 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards took place this weekend to kick off the start of the season. The Golden Globes are awarded by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to those who have released explemplary work both domestically and abroad. Films such as Les Miserables and Argo and television shows such as Girls and Homeland swept the awards, as expected.

The most exciting part of any award show, aside from any potential mishaps, is always the fashion. This year’s presenters and nominees did not diappoint in that department. Our favorite actresses donned everything from florals to polka dots and high to almost dangerously plunging necklines. These are my top five looks from the red carpet.

Rachel Weisz

Rachel Weisz was nominated for her role in the British film, The Deep Blue Sea. On the red carpet she wore a playful black dress with a sheer polka dot print by Louis Vuitton. I thought the look was made even more youthful with her wavy hair and the bow detailing at the waist. I liked that she didn’t go to for a look that was too over the top. She kept it simple, but looked very sweet and effortless.

Lucy Liu

Lucy Liu was a presenter at the awards and wore a strapless, floral Carolina Herrera gown. I thought this dress was gorgeous and a complete show-stopper. The robin’s egg blue base looks beautiful against Lucy’s skin and the shape of the dress really compliments her small waist.  I thought a fishtail braid was a great hairstyle choice. I’m glad she avoided a constricting updo or leaving her hair down because it would have distracted from the dress.

Michelle Dockery

Michelle Dockery of Downton Abbey wore a gold and white Alexandre Vauthier Couture gown. I thought the high neckline was really flattering and the intricate gold detailing added a really regal touch. The dress grazed her curves beautifully and had a small train. Unfortunately, her gown didn’t make it through the evening after getting red wine spilled on it, but it’s been said that Dockery handled the mishap with grace, as expected.

Julianne Hough

Dancer and actress Julianne Hough wore a baby pink Jenny Packham gown to the InStyle Magazine After Party. With her slicked back hair, she was really able to show off the dress as well as her gorgeous blue eyes. The dress featured a plunging neckline and, later, a slit up the side when Hough accidentally tore the gown while dancing.

Miranda Kerr

Victoria’s Secret model Miranda Kerr wore a stunning Dolce & Gabbana number in the color of the season, oxblood. She wore the gown to the red carpet, award ceremony and the InStyle Magazine After Party. The dress featured a deep plunging neckline as well as a slit up the side, which seemed to be a trend for the evening. While most would fear attempting to wear such a revealing gown in case of a wardrobe malfunction, Miranda could obviously pull it off (I’m willing to bet she would’ve looked fabulous in anything). She paired the gown with dangly earrings and soft wavy hair.
