Meet the newest Disney princess, Elena of Avalor.
She will debut in 2016 on an episode of “Sofia the First” a preschooler show on Disney Junior. After that, she will have her own series “Elena of Avalor”.
This new princess is especially exciting because she will be the first Latina princess ever. Disney described her as “a confident and compassionate teenager in an enchanted fairy tale kingdom inspired by diverse Latin cultures and folklore.” Elena will be an awesome role model for young girls who have yet to see a princess that looks like them.
While many people are skeptical of Disney’s decision, so many other are hopeful and excited for the diversity that Disney is creating with this new princess.
“Our creative team has delivered a universal story with themes that authentically reflect the hopes and dreams of our diverse audience,” Nancy Kanter, the Executive Vice President and General Manger of Disney Junior Worldwide said. “What excites us most is the chance to tell wonderful stories influenced by culture and traditions that are familiar to the worldwide population of Hispanic and Latino families and reflect the interests and aspirations of all children as told through a classic fairy tale.”
Elena will be voiced by Dominican Republic-born Aimee Carreo, an actress from ABC Family’s “Young & Hungry”.
