If you know about reguetón, you are sure to come across the name Tainy. He is the godfather of reguetón, producing most of the greatest hits of the genre, responsible for molding the genre from its earliest days and continues to exert his musical influence today. Despite Tainy’s massive influence, he only possesses one official solo studio album (two if you count the instrumental version of the album separately). That album is DATA, and this year it turned three years old. However, the messages of the album remain as relevant as they were in its release year. Tainy’s album, much like himself, is timeless and profound.
With DATA, Tainy achieved a fusion of galactic, robotic, futuristic, and Japanese themes. For background, one of Tainy’s favorite anime, “Kōkaku Kidōtai” (“Ghost in the Shell”), greatly inspired the album, not only for the design of the album cover—which resembles the anime’s storyline focus on a cyborg with a technologically augmented human brain—but also for its dark and melancholic aesthetic, as well as for its message of individuality in a world of high technology. He crafted this fusion all while staying loyal to the elements which characterize urban music (which, without Tainy, wouldn’t be the treasure of a genre that it is).
This album is filled with musical gold; its lyrics, melodies, featured artists, and production all make it inimitable. One thing that I love about this album is that each song is connected, noticeable in how the melodies from one song seem to transfer to the other if the album is listened to in tracklist order.
Nothing describes the concept of this album as well as the words from the genius himself: “In our world, human interaction is disappearing. Organic connections, nature, and our form of communication are being replaced by technology. With technology at my grasp, I’ve decided to create an android named Sena. I’ll give them life through songs, encrypted by ‘Data.’” I promise that I had not been aware of this Variety interview Tainy participated in upon the release of his album on June 29, 2023 prior to the making of this article, but how marvelous it is that Tainy was able to perfectly transmit exactly what he intended to!
The inspiration of DATA is magnificent. I am fascinated by the concept that Tainy presented to us in 2023. It’s as if he had scoured through a database of the mysterious woman’s—Sena’s—memories. I was given the impression of a sci-fi movie, amplified by the fact that even one of the songs on the album is titled “Sci-Fi”. Nevertheless, each song, not only through its lyrics, but also through its title, adds to the thematic composition of Tainy’s work. It’s as if each title is the name of an archive in the database, and when the song begins, we’re granted access to all of the contents of that archive. If I’m being completely sincere, each time I listen to the album I feel as if I am that woman whose memories are being analyzed, and I’m sure that this sentiment can be felt at a universal level thanks to Tainy’s skill.
Speaking of the concept of DATA, I love the dismembered design of each single belonging to the album, in that each single cover has a design of a distinct part of the body/computer. When they were dropped before the album’s official release, they served as an interesting way to tease the theme. Likewise, the cover of the instrumental version of the album, which is a sketch version of DATA’s cover, is equally well-thought as it compares the foundation of DATA (the instrumentals) to the foundation of a completed image (the sketch). On that note (no pun intended), I must say that instrumental music doesn’t attract my attention as much since I feel as if I need words, usually regardless of whether I know what is being said. A complete song, more often than not in my opinion, is in need of lyrics and instruments. However, if there is an album that is as beautiful with or without lyrics, it’s without a doubt DATA. So much so that Tainy even beat out Beethoven with this album.
Tainy, as a Puerto Rican but also a musical icon, has continued to spread his impact through his talent as a producer in his 23 years in the industry. What I most recommend is to go through his discography, all the way from the very beginning to his current work. Compare it to other contributions to the genre and see if Tainy can be heard, even when he didn’t directly make an input. I can almost guarantee you that even if Tainy isn’t tagged as a producer, you’ll recognize his instrumental charm as a foundation wherever you go in the genre. Above all, explore, enjoy, and add some more memories to your own database!
