College can be stressful, and the little amount of free time we have is usually spent sleeping, watching Netflix or hanging out with friends. But hear me out – “All About Love: New Visions“ by bell hooks is a must read and definitely worth replacing Netflix for a few hours.

It’s self-help without the preaching and modern philosophy that is easily understandable. This book covers many aspects of love: childhood love, divine love, romantic love, greedy love, etc. It challenges readers to redefine how they view and show love, and it’s worth reading all 237 pages. Living in a society that has seemed to stray away from love and compassion, this book couldn’t be more useful in helping challenge the stereotypes that surround this four-letter word.

Love is so much more than romance and stems far beyond romantic relationships. Love informs our actions and desires, so it’s time we start learning what it truly is and how it shapes our lives. Love isn’t something to be feared or suppressed – it should be celebrated and understood.

I urge you to pick up this book, grab a cup of coffee or tea, take the time to read it over the weekend, and pass it on to a friend. And with that, I’ll leave you with my favorite quote of the book: “The word ‘love’ is most often defined as a noun, yet… we would all love better if we used it as a verb.”
