The Benefits of Joining a Sorority

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

With movies like Legally Blonde, The House Bunny, and Sydney White, many laugh at or have strong opinions about joining a sorority in their college years. I, personally, was anti-sorority at one point. However, by joining a sorority, I realized everything that was shown in the movies or media was wrong, but many new doors, opportunities and relationships flourished. That being said, here are some of the great benefits of joining a sorority.

1.      Amazing Community Service Opportunities

Most, if not all Greek organizations are involved with philanthropies. Many plan and create fundraising events for their particular philanthropy. If not, they go help out at established community events as a group.

2.      Great leadership opportunities and experiences

Sororities would not function without a great executive council and committee heads. Each position has great responsibility and will teach anyone the importance of leadership and accountability.

3.      Great Friendships

Many say joining a sorority is “paying” for your friends. If this were true, then I would pay double the amount I am paying for these girls. The sorority you would call home will consist of many girls with your same or similar interests and values. You also can get matched with a Big or Twin with very similar interests.

4.      Great Networking Tool

Joining a Sorority increases your network which in turn can open many new opportunities. You may have a sister who knows the manager to a job you are looking at, or one that knows of an opportunity you have be looking for. Maybe a sister also knows someone that can help you in that arduous Chemistry class. In addition to the college years, you can connect with future bosses by just being Greek.

5.      Great Academic Tool

What many individuals forget is that women in sororities have to uphold a certain G.P.A. In a sorority, you will certainly find a study buddy to help you in a class and will help you keep track of study and library hours. It has also been reported that women in sororities have higher Grade Point Averages than other women on campus.
