3 Reasons Working at a Locally-Owned Restaurant is the Best

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

Growing up I often heard adults say “Do something you love and you’ll never work a day of your life.” I always loved this idea and recently realized that it doesn’t only apply to your ultimate dream job. As long as you can find reasons to love your work, it often doesn’t feel like work at all. Here are three reasons why working at a locally owned bar is the best.

1. You’re Family

Corporate restaurants often have a higher number of employees which can make it difficult to find a connection with the people you work with. Locally-owned businesses tend to be smaller and therefore employ fewer people total. This smaller employee list means you often work with the same people over and over, providing the opportunity for you and your co-workers to genuinely connect and become a solid work family.

2. Networking

Working in a locally-owned bar also provides a great chance to network with other local leaders and business owners. As a server or bartender you are able to meet a large number of people and build repeat clientele. This is a great way to build your professional network and open the door to new personal and professional opportunities.

3. Proximity

Commuting sucks and it can get expensive. If you work at a local bar or restaurant, you can often cut your commute down to nearly nothing. This means more time for yourself, your school, whatever you choose to spend time on. If it only takes you five minutes to get to work, you save the other 15 plus you would have otherwise spent getting there.
