In this day and age, it feels like personal styles and unapologetic expressions through fashion have exploded! Maximalism, vintage pieces, layering, and D.I.Y. have taken over TikTok, street style, the red carpet, and couture fashion houses. When building your closet, it’s important to shop smart and not excessively, as quality pieces that are taken care of can last many, many years and are more sustainable for our environment.

Also, no matter what’s popular at the moment, the most important thing is that YOU like what you wear! It sounds cliche but nothing is more in style than confidence and self-love. It can be hard to find your personal style and it can always change over time, so here’s a guide to some of the 2023 trending styles that you can look out for to see if they’re for you!

Hair Swirl

Your hair can be one of the most personal aspects of your appearance; cut or color, volume or style, there are infinite possibilities to a chic look! Most recently, a hairstyle has been hitting the carpets of several actresses, singers, and models. The hair swoop is a unique way to style your bangs that’s reminiscent of the 60s-mod era and is a subtle yet endearing aspect to make any outfit. Hooded Dresses

2023 welcomed Paris Fashion Week which had the most artistic designers and fashion houses show their designs under the Parisian lights to a worldwide crowd. Fashion houses including Saint Laurent, Zuhair Murad, and Gaurav Gupta all had one thing in common: hooded dresses. A call to the iconic Studio 54 and triple threat and all-around icon Grace Jones, hooded dresses can encapsulate all different styles from 70s and 80s glam to futuristic elegance. See Beyoncé wearing Saint Laurent Spring 23 at her Renaissance party in France, Jenna Ortega in Saint Laurent at the brand’s menswear show, and Simone Ashley at the British Fashion Awards.

Crochet

It’s safe to say that crochet has officially made its comeback for a few years now, becoming a staple in the wardrobes of anyone, regardless of age or gender! What makes crochet so attractive is that it can take any form; from cardigans and bucket hats to gowns and bikini tops, crochet can be whatever you want it to be! Along with a cute outfit, crochet can also bring the satisfaction of making something yourself or buying from a small business. The benefits of crochet include its sustainability as it’s an easy skill to learn with practice. Some of the best and one-of-a-kind pieces can be found on Etsy, Depop, or other social media, so buying handmade products directly from the seller eliminates the mass production and dangerous business practices of fast fashion. Denim Maxi Skirt

A good skirt is an essential part of any closet. Every year, a new style invades the Instagram feeds and the streets. We all remember the viral beige Miu Miu mini skirt which was worn by all celebrities from Hunter Schafer to Nicole Kidman and even garnered its own Instagram page (@miumiuset). This new year brings a total 180, saying goodbye to the barely there micro-mini skirt and hello to the denim maxi skirt. The maxi skirt can seem quite conservative as it sits at the waist and flows to the ankles, but depending on the fabric and style it can seamlessly fit into any aesthetic and denim takes this classic in a cool and edgy direction! Take your inspiration from the Balenciaga ss23 collection, the Maison Margiela ss23 collection, Yoyo Cao’s Acne Studios patchwork skirt, Elsa Hosk sporting from her own brand ‘Helsa’, and the numerous times the Hadid sisters have rocked them!
