10 Ways to Get the Most Out of October

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

HAPPY SPOOKTOBER FIRST!

Yes, it is finally October! Even if you are not at wizarding school because lets face it, we are all still waiting on our acceptance letters, us muggles can still celebrate the holiday right!

October is the time of year when the weather is just the right temperature, where you don’t feel like you are melting as soon as you walk outside and the holiday season is just getting started. You can dress up as skimpy or as terrifying as you want (because there are no rules). If you are anything like me, you have already gotten a few months head start on your costume.

So how do you celebrate the month of October? Need some inspiration on how to make this month all it is cracked up to be?

  1. Carve or Paint a Pumpkin!

Come on and get a group of friends together, take a break from schoolwork, and get those creative juices flowing. Even if your pumpkin does not turn out like a masterpiece, at least you tried! It is all about having fun anyway. Pinterest has all the printable templates you could possibly imagine. You can even click here and read how to make your pumpkin last longer.

  1. Decorate your Doors

These are more cute than spooky but depending on what you want to portray, you can come up with door decor that is just right for you! You can go really cheap or spend a little extra, again depending on your preference or budget. If you want to get the bang for your buck, buy things that will last for future Halloweens.

  1. Dress Up For Halloween

No matter what you choose to be for Halloween, it will be better than not dressing up! Whether you want to be a one woman show, or you want to do group costumes, your choices are unlimited. Make sure you all agree because it should be in everyone’s interest to have a blast with it. If you can’t decide who to be, or what to be, put the names of your cosplay choices into a hat and draw a name.

  1. Do Fun Costume Makeup

Makeup is daily routine for many women, but on Halloween it means we let loose and get creative with it. If you already enjoy playing with makeup, try one of these cool looks, or find one of your own liking.

  1. Watch Halloween Movies

Depending on your WIMP-O-METER, these might be just right for you, or they might be too childish. But who doesn’t appreciate the classics? Make a list of the Halloween movies you want to watch each night of October, or look out for upcoming movies on your TV Guide or TV network websites. ABC Family and Disney Channel are always playing Halloween movies in October. You may want to check out what they have on Netflix as well!

  1. Make a Halloween Playlist

From soundtracks of your favorite Halloween flicks to modern music, there is so much to choose from when it comes to a festive mix. Songs you must include are the Monster Mash, Thriller, Ghostbusters, The Addams Family theme song, and This is Halloween!

  1. Have a Costume Party or Attend One

It’s so cool seeing what other people dress up as! It just adds to what Halloween is all about!

  1. Do Something Thrilling

Go to Halloween Horror Nights, a local Haunted House, or even a Ghost Tour. Do something that will give you goosebumps, and make you feel alive all at the same time.

  1. Buy Fall Candles and/or Air Scents

Make your room, entire apartment, or car smell like the season itself! Many places have holiday sales going on. Check out may be Bath & Body Works, Yankee Candle, and Wal-Mart!

  1. Make Holiday Treats

Why wouldn’t you want to make scrumptious treats like these? As most of us don’t trick-or-treat anymore, we need something sweet too. Get crafty and make a whole day of getting messy in the kitchen.

I hope you enjoyed my breakdown of what to do in October and that you partake in at least a few of these ideas and activities. Have a happy Halloween, collegiettes™!

I am a Junior at the University of South Florida where I am claiming a Bachelor's Degree in Mass Communications concentrating on Public Relations. In the future I'd like to plan concerts for a big corporation. When I'm not attending class, or working on homework I'm usually catching up on my television shows, playing video games, writing articles, or spending time with my family, friends, and dogs. I am apart of many fandoms-too many to count, and I've always wanted to go to a convention and cosplay.
