Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life Survival Guide

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USC chapter.

It’s been about 10 years since Lorelai and Rory Gilmore last graced our TV screens, but they’re back and better than ever. On Friday, Netflix released the much anticipated series revival, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. It follows the mother-daughter duo on their many adventures over the course of the year. With only four episodes and each about an hour and a half long, it is the perfect show to binge watch while you’re taking a break from studying for finals. Whether you decide to watch all four episodes in one sitting or watch them over the course of a few days, here are a few things you’ll need to keep up with the Gilmore Girls.

1.     Coffee

Can you really watch Gilmore Girls without at least one cup of coffee? The answer is no. The girls head to Luke’s Diner every morning for their cup of Joe and so should you! I know, I know, we all don’t have our own Luke Danes to make us coffee, but throw a cup in the Keurig and enjoy some coffee while catching up with your favorite Stars Hollow residents.

2.     Junk Food

In true Gilmore fashion, you have to have an array of snacks to properly enjoy the series. Make a stop at the grocery store before heading home to watch and grab as many junk food items as you can. Pop-tarts, tator tots, popcorn, pizza, and hey even order some Chinese takeout if you’re feeling extra-hungry.

3.     Phone

Now I know there are no phones allowed in Lukes diner, but if you don’t Snapchat yourself watching the series revival, did you even watch it? Trust me, you’re going to want to let everyone know you’re watching it (because it’s so good and everyone should watch it) and you’ll probably want to text your mom at least a few times while watching to tell her how much you love her. (Update: I texted my mom five times before forcing her to watch the whole series over with me.)

4.     Tissues

It’s probably smart to keep a box of tissues handy while watching. The Gilmore Girls, Lorelai, Rory, and Emily, go through ups and downs throughout the year and some are bound to bring on some tears. So maybe wear some waterproof mascara too, just a thought!

5.     Your Mom or BFF

This series pulls on your heartstrings and is best shared with your mom or best friends or whomever you love. The close relationships between the characters just give everyone a warm, fuzzy feeling. Grab a blanket, some popcorn, and cuddle up on the couch to watch the series.

The Gilmore Girls have graced our tv and computer screens for the last time, but thanks to Netflix you can watch the series over and over again until you just can’t get enough. Then if you are really feeling nostalgic, go ahead and restart Gilmore Girls from the beginning. Actually, I’m going to watch it now and you should too!

Hey there! My name is Katherine Lee, but I go by Moi- a childhood nickname that has stuck throughout my entire life.  I am originally from the Bay Area and now I'm student at the Annenberg School of Communications and Journalism at USC.  The one thing I love more than hitting the gym is hitting every good restaurant wherever I am.  A foodie and a gym rat makes me quite a contradictory person, but I hey- I just like to keep things interesting!
