Fashion Inspires Us All

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USC chapter.

Fashion. We all have our own unique styles, tastes, and ideas of what’s hot and what’s not.  One person’s favorite outfit could be another person’s worst nightmare.  But one thing’s for sure.  Fashion is a sure-fire way of expressing ourselves.  What you wear gives others a glimpse into what kind of person you might possibly be.  What you wear reflects your lifestyle and your personality.  Every day while trekking across campus from class to class, I notice what others are wearing and it gives me insight into their world.

Ever see that girl with her hair tied back rocking Lululemons and a cute track jacket?  She loves to work out and be active, but knows how to look cute and stay comfortable at the same time. You would most often catch her at the gym or playing sports.  She’s healthy, self-aware, and beautiful.  Ever see that girl wearing jeans, a flannel top, and colorful Vans?  Yep, you guessed it.  This girl is laid back and knows what the term “California girl” means.  She loves the outdoors, especially the beach, and isn’t afraid to get down and dirty and rough it up with the boys.  She’s carefree, relaxed, and mellow.  Ever see that girl donning the cuffed, rolled up jeans, low cut tank, and wedge heels?  And don’t forget her oversized purse and sunglasses.  This girl screams confidence.  She’s not afraid to flaunt what she’s got.  She loves that preppy look, reflecting her high-class attitude.  She’s got it all, and she knows it.

She’s glamorous, has all the latest brand name items, and looks like she’s ready for her close-up 24/7.  Ever see that girl with the classic band t-shirt, shorts, vintage leather boots, and an over the shoulder bag?  This girl loves to bring back old styles in her outfits.  She’s creative, artistic, and loves to shop at vintage clothing stores downtown.  You might catch her at the local café reading a book or listening to that underground rock band’s new line of songs.

Some of us, including myself, don’t have just one style but love to mix and match and play around with multiple styles.  Depending on the day and our mood, at one moment we might want to be a glamorous diva, and at another we might want to look laid back and feel comfortable.  I see all of these styles on campus, and many more.  Being girls, fashion is very important to us!  We want to look cute, sexy, flirty, approachable, and fun all at the same time, and fashion can make or break that!

One style I can’t get enough of right now is leather boots.  Everywhere I look on campus, I see girls wearing distressed leather boots, and I see them being worn so many ways!  Wearing them with jeans and a cute flannel top is perfect for a colder day on campus.  For a bit of a warmer day, wearing them with jean shorts, a cute top, and classic Ray Bans shows that you’re flirty and fun and have that rock star personality that you’re not afraid to let shine through.  I’ve seen girls wearing boots with cute summer dresses!  This combination shows that a girl still has that girly-girl essence and likes to dress up looking cute and feeling comfortable, but she knows how to put an edge on her wardrobe and is simply fashion fearless.  Last summer, I took a vacation to New York with my mom, and we went into this awesome boutique while walking in Soho.  I ended up buying the most amazing pair of leather boots I’ve ever owned to this day.  It’s a good thing I did too, because these shoes have become a fashion must! I know that I can’t live without mine because I wear them practically every other day!

The most important rule when it comes to fashion is to stay fresh, fun and fearless, and always remember to express yourself!  Every girl is confident when she’s wearing what she loves, no matter what style it is.  There’s always room for exploration and creativity in fashion.  Let your true colors shine!
