New student and surfer, Matthew Brown (or Matt, as he likes to be called), shares his tips and insights into surfing, why he loves it so much and the best spots to hit this summer.
Her Campus: Tell us about yourself; have you always been interested in surfing?
MB: Yes, I have been interested in surfing for a long time. I have always loved the beach and having grown up with surfing, I’ve naturally become interested in it.
HC: How did you first get into surfing?
MB: I first got into surfing when I was taught by my Dad at a young age. It was one of the most exciting things to me when I first started. I remember thinking: “I want to be famous!”
HC: Are you looking for a career in surfing?
MB: I think everybody hopes to get a career in the surfing industry, but for now, I’m keen to stick to free surf sessions. This is mostly because it’s such a competitive industry and there are so many good surfers out there. Maybe one day it will happen, but right now I’d like to just focus on my Environmental Science degree.
HC: What has been your favorite moment in surfing so far?
MB: It would have to be pulling off my first 180, after many attempts! (laughs) This is where a surfer rotates the surfboard 180 degrees while riding a wave. The first time I did it, I didn’t think I could ever do it again! But ofcourse (knowing me) I did try it again and now it’s easy!
HC: Do you have any advice for surfers who are just starting out?
MB: Just get out there as much as you can and go for a surf every chance you get. Every weekend or between uni classes if you can!
HC: What are your hopes and goals with surfing?
MB: Just to keep improving on my skills and learn new tricks. I don’t think I will ever “get famous” or anything.
HC: What are the best spots to hit this summer?
MB: There are heaps of spots up at the Coast where there are great waves, but I would recommend, Dickey Beach, Currimmundi Lake, Kings Beach and Wurtulla. They’re my favourite spots.
