This past Friday, September 20, Rihanna released her Savage X Fenty Show on Amazon Prime. The show was full of models and dancers of all colors and sizes, sporting her newest line of lingerie. As if we expected any less from Rihanna, this was not any ordinary New York Fashion Week show. We all know Rihanna doesn’t play by the rules. Rihanna had more dancers than she had models and a great deal of A-List performances. It’s as if she took The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, and well, Rihanna-ed it.

Viewers watching the show on Amazon Prime got a backstage seat, as Rihanna and her team took us through not only the show itself but what it took to make the show in a relatively limited amount of time. From designing her lingerie, casting models and dancers, fitting every member of the show, learning some fierce choreography, and so much more, my jaw remained on the floor. Rihanna’s intense yet captivating opening performance sets the tone for the rest of the show. She is followed by performances from artists such as Big Sean, A$AP Ferg, Migos, Halsey, DJ Khaled, Fat Joe, Tierra Whack, and Fabolous. We also get two impressive dance numbers, one from Laverne Cox and another from Normani, and I say impressive as an understatement. Rapper 21 Savage also took the stage walking the runway as a model, alongside Joan Smalls. We see a number of other familiar faces, such as Cara Delevigne, Bella and Gigi Hadid, Christian Combs, Slick Woods and more.

As if all of that was not enough, the set up of the stage was pretty amazing as well. There were many staircases for performers to come and go as they pleased, as well as an abundance of archways for models to utilize as they posed. My favorite part of the show consisted of the four-story tower prop that held 20 separate archways that showcased dancers dancing while a light show took place inside of each archway. As stunning as all of the models looked, especially Bella Hadid’s gold number, the dancing really set the bar for the entire show. I know, insane, right?

Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty lingerie line comes at a really important time regarding inclusion and equality. We are seeing now more than ever a diverse representation of all people no matter the shape, size, gender, ability, or anything that would make a person labeled “different.” Savage X Fenty embraces the idea of inclusion and celebrates the differences we all share. Rihanna stated in the documentary, “Every woman deserves to feel sexy. We are sexy; we are multifaceted, and I want women to embrace that to the fullest.” The Savage X Fenty show has set the standard even higher for how we represent women, and all people, in the media, and it is important for more companies to follow suit. As much as I absolutely adored and was so impressed by the Savage X Fenty Show, Rihanna, we are still waiting for new music. Don’t forget about us.
