Things You Learn About Your BFFs From Living Together

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at URI chapter.

Between classes, jobs, and other time-consuming obligations, college takes up a lot of time. Finding free time during the week and making the most of our weekends is what us college students depend on to enjoy college life to the fullest. Most of us spend our free time doing ridiculous things with our friends, and making memories until we know them like the back of our hand.

But, no matter how many hours you spend with your BFFs, there are still those few things that you won’t get to know unless you live with them. Here are the things that you don’t learn about your BFFs until you live together:

1.     How long it really takes them to get ready

Sure you used to meet-up and “get ready” together, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t take 2 hours to get themselves together before coming over. Living together allows you to see eachother through every step of your/her routine, and you may be surprised just how long it takes to look that fab.

2.     How comfortable they are being naked

You may be used to getting changed in front of each other, but living together calls for a lot of time just walking around in whatever makes them comfortable. Whether it be pantless, shirtless, braless, or just straight up naked, you’re sure to see a lot more of your BFFs than you used to.

3.     Their eating habits

Sure you’ve gone out to eat together, probably visited the dining hall a few times, but living together means you witness every meal and snack they consume and you really learn what they eat. More importantly, how abnoxious they are when they eat (too quickly, too slowly, too loud, etc.).

4.     Their cleaning habits

You may never expect some of your BFFs to be as dirty or clean as they are. When it comes to maintaining a house, apartment, or dorm room, gross things like hairballs and dust build up pretty quick. Living together will shine a light on whether or not they care about the cleanliness of their surroundings.5.     How willing they are to share

Money is pretty tight for any college student. Living together means all your stuff is in the same place, and I must say it’s pretty interesting finding out who will share their clothes and food, and who prefers keeping those things to themselves.

6.     How they deal with their emotions

Living together makes it basically impossible to get away with a tantrum or crying spree without your roommate noticing. Living together really shines a light on how well or poorly they handle their emotions. Make sure you know when they need privacy or when you should offer a helping hand!

7.     How much common sense they have

Things like cooking and cleaning take less knowledge and more common sense. When it comes to which foods can/can’t go in the microwave, you’ll be surprised to find out who knows what.

8.     How well of a housewife they would make

Most of your friends will be a spitting image of their mothers, and whether this means being an exceptional cooker and cleaner, or the exact opposite, it’s pretty entertaining to imagine them in 10 years.

9.     How many guys they are really seeing.

Before they probably told you about their hookups, but maybe it was only the ones with a juicy story. Living together makes it pretty impossible to hide any hookups from each other.

10.     Their favorite drunk foods

There’s nothing like ordering take-out or whipping up leftovers when you get home from a night out. Most of us have a food that we really just crave when we’re drunk. Living with your friends will teach you who likes what type of greasy, delicious junk food at 2 a.m.

11.     How often they’re willing to turn up

After a long day of exams, sometimes we feel that it’s college, and we just need to get drunk to reward ourselves. Living together shows you who will turn up no matter what day or time it is.

12.     Their sleep schedule

Living together shows us how well, poorly, or ofetn some of us sleep.

13.     Way TMI on their bowel movements…

College habits like crappy eating (no pun intended) and drinking alcohol can lead to some strange bowel movements.  Living with your BFFs ensures that you will know way too much about when they go.

14.     All about their menstrual cycle (Date, symptoms, when they’re PMSing)

It’s impossible to live with your BFFs and not know when their time of the month comes around. Now when they are acting way too emotional, or giving snappy comments you know why.

15.     Their weird habits

Sure, you don’t have to live together to know your friends are weird, but when you are constantly under the same roof, you start to realize that they may just cut their nails too often or eat salsa out of the jar.

16.     Their natural looks in the morning

There’s nothing better than the way we look when we roll out of bed, especially after a night out. Thank god we have our BFFs to wake up to and laugh at each others makeup from last night or hair that looks like a squirrel’s nest.

17.     How much they miss home

Some of us move away to college and miss home tremendously. Some of us are happy to get away from that place. Living together shows us who calls mom and dad or their home-town friends a lot, and who has moved on from that stage in their life.

18.     How often they clean their clothes

You don’t have to wash jeans after every wear, right? Or sweatshirts? Or bras?  Living with your friends shows you who really cares to wash every time, and who only does laundry once it is absolutley necessary.

19.     How much you really miss them when they’re gone!

Finally, living with your best friends brings you closer than ever. While you were used to being apart before you lived together, now you just can’t go a day without them. So if you currently live with your BFFs, enjoy it while you can!
