Recap of the 2015 Emmy Awards

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at URI chapter.

Let’s face it– for any award show, the nomineees, the attendees and their wardrobes are really the only reasons a lot of us are tuning in. But at the 2015 Emmy Awards show, things were anything but boring. This year’s show was hosted by Andy Samberg, who had plenty of witty comments and laughter to keep the event running smoothly all night, but it was the history making award recipients who really stole the show!

Here are some of the night’s highlights:

Viola Davis Dazzles!

Actress Viola Davis won the award for Best Actress in a Drama. As the first black woman to ever recieve this award, Davis shared this moving thought in her acceptance speech: “You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there.”

The Game of Thrones Takeover

With a record-breaking number of 12 Emmy Awards including: Best Drama Series, Best Directing for a Drama Series, and Best Writing for a Drama Series, the hit HBO series dominated the evening.

Transparent– An Award for the Transgender Community

Jeffery Tambor won best actor for his portrayal of Maura Pfefferman in the comedy-drama television series, Transparent. In his acceptance speech, he shared some very heart-rending thoughts on his work: “I had a teacher who used to say, ‘When you act, you have to act as if your life depends on it,’ ” he told the audience. “And now I’ve been given the opportunity to act, because people’s lives depend on it.”

Tracy Morgan’s Resurgence

After a six-car collision last summer left Morgan in a serious condition, he made his grand reappearance at the 2015 Emmys. Morgan did not disappoint his audience either, his wit and heartfelt laughter were met with a standing ovation. Morgan assured the audience of his recovery with a lighthearted comment: “Only recently have I started to feel like myself again, which means a whole lot of y’all women are gonna get pregnant at the after party.” Well, he’s certainly feeling better.

The Evening’s Best Dressed?

Kerry Washington and Claire Danes were many peoples’ favorites. It’s pretty hard to choose a winner from so many spectacular looks, so we’ll let you be the judge.
