If Your 2019 Didn’t Start as Expected, This One’s For You

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at URI chapter.

In the months prior to another new year beginning, our mindset naturally shifts and deliberates everything we want to improve or change as we hope to become instantly refreshed. Yet, life still goes on, and sometimes more than most, things happen unexpectedly. My family and I lost a loved one during this winter break and now it will be one that I will never forget. Prior to this happening, my mindset seemed to have lost the traces of my resolutions and replaced them with thoughts of how I am graduating college in four months. This certainly made things more difficult to focus on and instead I was just highly motivated to do nothing. But as the weeks went on, I was just looking forward to being back in my element at school because I knew I would finally feel like myself again.

Winter break is always a difficult transition back to reality, but as a senior it feels like that level in your favorite video game that you just cannot get past. It was a great time for some serious reflection and knowing that once I was back, I was going to devote a lot of my time to myself and getting back on track. This may sound relatable to a lot of you and if you are also graduating in May, it is crucial to use this semester as a chance to truly understand yourself on a deeper level than before. This is your last semester, which won’t seem real until we’re in caps and gowns, but it must be taken advantage of. I feel like we’re told every semester to go out and do things we haven’t done before (pretty sure I’ve posted about it before) but now it’s a reality – one that I haven’t been prepared for yet. I don’t mean to sound so blunt, I’m just obsessed with the idea of taking advantage of life and I love to share that concept with everyone I can.

I think the reason why I feel so stongly about this is because we are the only college students who have experienced the current situation of the world from this age. In the most simplest way I can express it, the world is scary right now, more than it has been in the past and us college students should certainly have a lot of emotions about it as we prepare to enter it in a few months. On a daily basis we (try to) accept the fact that we need to grow up a little faster than college students in the past, due to the way the world is changing. So before we do that, we have to make sure we are ready in all aspects, especially as young women. This last semester will be a period of growth unlike any other and you don’t want it to go to waste. It was only my first day of classes today but I am already feeling an overwhelming feeling of motivation and I’m going to run with it as long as I can.

So with all of the crazy thoughts that might be running through your head at this point in your life, nothing is more important than finding a center that you can operate from. We all need to discover what this balance is and implement it in our lives as we prepare to leave the safety of college. Even though 2019 may not have started the way we hoped, it’s never too late to make it your year.
