How Winter Break Turned Me Into A Film Critic

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at URI chapter.

Did you find yourself sitting on your couch way too much during this past winter break? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. As exciting as I thought my first ever college winter break would be, it was not all like that. I did enjoy spending time at home with friends and family. My mom and I had so much downtime, we watched some movies and television shows together that had been on our to-do lists for a while. We got through the movie Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, the television show Fleabag, the new Netflix documentary Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez, and I am currently watching but haven’t quite finished the Netflix reality show, The Circle. After watching four dramatically different TV shows and movies over break, I am here to give my honest opinion on each.

“Once Upon A Time In Hollywood”

This movie was great; it was absolutely worth the watch! I mean there was a star-studded cast, such an adventurous plot, and an all-around great movie. Without giving much of the movie away, there are a few things I want to say about it. I loved it because it was a flat out entertaining movie. I also loved Brad Pitt’s character for more reasons than one. My mom really enjoyed this movie because she understood the history of the time period and the characters were a lot more meaningful to someone who understands what is actually taking place in the movie based on real events that happened in the 60s-70s. All I’m going to say is you cannot predict this movie, even if you think you can.

“Fleabag”

I had been hearing about the British comedy for a few months, with many people telling me to watch it, so my mom and I did just that. The first season is raunchy. There’s no other way to describe it. I loved it, but be prepared for at least one sex scene per episode. Fleabag’s character is absolutely hysterical and by the second season, it’s hard not to feel bad for her a bit. The series goes by super quick, with only six episodes per season, and only two seasons. I am begging that there will be a third! It is just a super witty show with relatable content that anyone comfortable enough to watch it should. I promise you’ll be laughing!

“Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez”

This documentary is so disturbing, yet also informative, and pretty heartbreaking all in one. If you don’t know, the documentary goes through the life of former NFL football star Aaron Hernandez, and the events that led up to his death. There is definitely a lot to unpack throughout the three-part documentary, but it is, by all means, worth the watch, even if you have never heard of his name before. This documentary definitely opened up my eyes to what actually goes on in the world of professional sports.

“The Circle”

Last but not least, I am currently on episode eight out of 12 of The Circle. Trying to describe the show in the simplest terms, it is basically a reality show where players compete against each other to become influencers and try their best not to get “blocked” (kicked off of the show), in hopes of winning $100,000. As uninteresting as that sounds, the people that they have on the show are absolute characters, and I’m sure you will get a kick out of every one of them. I wish I could pick a favorite but I actually cannot, I am rooting for all of them. The show comes with many surprises, and so far I am still hooked.

Well, my list is complete. Some of you may think I had way too much downtime, and others may think I did not watch enough. Either way, I seriously enjoyed watching each of those television shows/movies/documentaries and I am sure you will too!
