Halloween Costumes for Hardcore Classic Rock Music Fans

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at URI chapter.

1. Dolly Parton

Characterized by her platinum blonde hair that follows the motto “The higher the hair, the closer to heaven,” Dolly Parton’s classic Southern-Barbie style is unforgettable. Fun and flirty, dressing up as Dolly for Halloween is simple yet cute.

2. Cher

Referred to as the “Goddess of Pop,” Cher is an American singer and actress, who embodies the female autonomy. Her music genre ranges far and wide, from disco to folk to rock to pop. Similarly, her style ranges from slinky dresses, large hoop earrings to crop tops matching with wide sequined pants. Cher has been a fashion icon since the 1960’s, starting the trends of slick straight hair, bold colored eye shadows, silk tops, chainmail dresses and the classic naked dress.

3. The Beach Boys

If you and your gang are looking for a costume that’s simple yet not the basic “frat boy” look, then dressing up as the Beach Boys is right up your alley! Borrow your dad’s Hawaiian printed shirt, argyle sweater and you’ll be all set. What could be easier?

4. David Bowie

Dripping with glitter, David Bowie’s style is defined with bold colors, creative pieces and sparkling makeup. Pulling out those catsuits, embroidered coats, vibrant tie-dye suits and wide leg pants, Bowie was a fan of experimenting with anything and everything. He made it all work. Wear your most eccentric 80’s themed silky tops, skin tight metallic pants and knee-high boots to get the classic David Bowie look.

5. Stevie Nicks

One of the most iconic singer and songwriter of our time, Stevie Nicks. She is best known for being the front woman of Fleetwood Mac, a band formed in 1967 that still performs today. Nick’s style can be described as “Bohemian hippy meets wicked rock star.” Defined by loose drapey cardigans and dresses, tall hats, flowing floor length sleeves, wind blown blond curls and bangs, dressing up as Stevie Nicks would help you embrace your inner free spirit.

6. Bob Marley

A Jamaican singer and songwriter, living from 1945 to 1981, Marley brought more than just reggae and Rastafarianism to the world. He also brought his relaxed and classic style to everyday life. Wearing red, green and gold in almost every outfit, the colors of Rasta, Marley can also be seen wearing denim on denim in almost and every picture taken of him. It’s basically a guarantee that you already have the majority of a Bob Marley inspired outfit in your closet, and who isn’t a fan of the good vibes you could give off?

7. ABBA

The Swedish pop group formed in 1972, ABBA, is perfect for the 80’s queen inside of you and your best pals. Known for wearing colorful outfits composed of extravagant embellished bell-bottoms, silk poncho tops, shiny monochromatic suits and over the knee metallic and snakeskin gogo boots.

8. Prince

Known for his iconic appearance, flamboyant stage presence and extravagant fashion sense, Prince became well known in the 1970’s and his sense of style certainly did not make him blend in with everyone else. Producing music during the height of the disco age, his fashion can be described as colorful, daring and iconoclast. Often wearing lots of jewelry, shiny latex suits, bold and structured jackets, bell-bottoms and healed boots, Prince’s style is a look that will last throughout the ages. Don’t forget to wear dark eyeliner with your disco costume!

9. Bruce Springsteen

A classic American dude from the Jersey Shore, Bruce Springsteen was a real life greaser. Defined by wearing denim on denim, leather jackets and bandanas, his style began the grunge phase and let’s be honest, we’re all still kind of in the grunge phase right…(well if you’re not, then one of your friends is and I’m sure they’ll let you borrow their thrifted flannels for Halloween).

10. The Rolling Stones

Formed in London, England in 1962, The Rolling Stones were originally composed of six members, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Brian Jones, Bill Wyman and Ian Stewarts. Although some of the members of their band have changed, their sense of fashion hasn’t. Their rock dad style can be described as silk shirts, tousled suit and ties, animal prints, studded leather jackets, slim fitting scuffed black jeans, lots of leather and a few animal furs. What could better?
