Halloween 2020 is Different: Here’s How You Can Celebrate

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at URI chapter.

Halloween is looking quite different in the year 2020, but the fun does not have to stop! One of my favorite days of the year is Halloween; I find it so fun to dress up, and going trick or treating makes me feel like the main character on Gilmore Girls- who wouldn’t want to run through Star’s Hollow with a pillowcase full of candy? I am sure there are a bunch of people who are as bummed as I am that Halloween will not be able to happen the way it does every other year, but hey, here is a great opportunity to try something new. Here is a list of oh-so-fun activities that are spooktacular and safe for this October 31st.

Spooky Movie Night

Scary movies are a great way to get the Halloween spirit flowing! I have not seen most of my friends in-person since March, but that does not mean I haven’t been able to keep up the movie nights we all enjoyed while on campus. We have made virtual movie nights a possibility by using Netflix and Zoom. Everyone logs into the Netflix Party and joins a group zoom call, it is super simple for everyone to enjoy a movie night together. Netflix Party makes it possible for the movie to play at the same time for each of us, and Zoom makes us feel like we are all back in Browning Hall lounge filling up on popcorn. I am so excited to have a Halloween movie night full of fright with spooky movies and with my best friends.

Costumes, Costumes, Costumes

Dressing up is definitely my favorite part of Halloween. I spend months planning my costume, and I don’t plan on holding back this year. The scary movie marathon certainly wouldn’t be the same if we didn’t all show up to our Zoom call in costumes. My friends and I have decided to do a Despicable Me theme this year, and it is making me so excited. Halloween festivities are at a standstill, but dressing up does not have to stop!

Tik Tok Time

C’mon… do not deny that Tik Tok is a ton of fun. When I hear “spooky season”, I also hear a massive Tik Tok opportunity. There are so many creative ways to use the app, and it is a great platform to share Halloween fun with the world when you can’t exactly go out into the world. I am hoping to see plenty of scary makeup videos, cool costumes, and new dances on my “For You” Page this Halloween. Who knows, maybe I will see yours!

Goodie Bags

Who doesn’t adore a goodie bag filled to the brim with Halloween spirit? Putting together little bags with candy, homemade cookies, those really cool spider rings that pop up every year, and handmade crafts is not only fun for you, but also fun for whoever receives the goodies! I am hoping to make goodie bags for my neighbors and leaving the bags at their front doors, just like trick or treating, but with distance! This is a safe and thoughtful way to spread joy this Halloween.

Pinterst Snacks

Pinterest is one of the best places to find trendy holiday snacks, and Halloween does not disappoint. I have found some of the coolest snack recipes I cannot wait to try this year. I am excited to make witch finger cookies, ghostly chocolate-covered strawberries, and creepy vampire teeth apple bites. There are so many opportunities to spice up any snack, and Pinterest makes bringing Halloween creations to life so simple.

Happy spooky season to all! I hope you enjoy embracing all the fun that is to be had this Halloween!

Hi! My name is Alyssa Houlis, and I am a senior English major with a business minor. I have enjoyed my studies at URI for all of the opportunities I get to write and explore the lovely language that is English. I am excited to see what opportunities will present themselves once I graduate from lil' Rhody! In my free time, you will probably catch me hugging a tree, painting, or skating!
