Building Confidence Even When You Feel Like You Have None

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at URI chapter.

Confidence is something that is a part of everyday life. It determines the way that we walk, how we talk, and what we present to others. Confidence truly affects every aspect of our being. Living in the world that we live in today, it is common to feel a lack of this extremely important character trait. After all, confidence is absolutely necessary for success in everyday life. I am going to give you some tips on the best way to build confidence even when you feel like you are starting from nothing.

Visualize yourself being the person you want to be!

What are some aspects of your ideal person? Are they charismatic? Do they have a lot of money? Are they extremely in shape? All of these things play a role in confidence. When you think and visualize the person that you want to be one day, you are almost thinking it into existence.

Stay well-groomed and dress in a way that makes you feel good!

When you take care of yourself by washing your hair and brushing your teeth twice a day, you will feel cleaner. They can turn your non-productive self-loathing mood into an extremely confident and ready to take-on-the-world mood. When you dress presentable, you feel powerful. When you wear something that makes you feel good in your own skin, you walk taller and own the day!

Kill the negative thinking!

All of the thoughts you have going through your head that isn’t ‘YOU GO GIRL’ or a self pat on the back for all your hard work, need to go through one ear and out the other. No matter what situation you are placed in, you and only you are able to control the outcome, and 99% of the time a challenge is all a mental game. The final exam that you are going to take, that you studied your butt off for….YOU ARE GOING TO ACE! The boy you want to go up to and talk with… is sometimes just waiting for you to make the first move. Get out of your head and into your world. Be present and stop thinking about the what-ifs or the I’m not.

Come prepared!

No matter what the situation is, prepare! If you had to present for a super important class, you wouldn’t go into it not knowing a single thing. Just like how you wouldn’t do that, don’t skip on preparing for your life. If you know that it is going to be a busy week, schedule in time to take care of yourself so that you can stay on top of your game.

Now, this isn’t every way to build confidence. It is only a few but it is a start. If you make time for yourself and you drill in positive thinking and creating a space where you love the person who you are, then you will become the person you are visualizing in your head!
