The Best Thing That Ever Happened To My Skincare Routine

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at URI chapter.

Every girl knows how tiring and impossible it is to find a skincare routine that actually works. With a million different products on the market for every skin type imaginable, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. I myself was once an innocent victim of the bottomless pit that Sephora and countless other companies call skincare. What many girls don’t realize is that there is an easy and inexpensive way to get out of this rut. Sample sizes! After accidentally discovering this golden jewel of the skincare industry, I am finally confident in what products I choose to buy, how often I buy them, and the price tag.

Every girl even remotely interested in skincare or makeup has experienced receiving a sample size of a product. While many look down on it as a scheme conjured up by big wig cosmetics companies to hook customers on new products, it is truly the most efficient way to find the right products for your skin. However, you must know how to take advantage of sample sizes in order to get the best results.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is wasting their sample size in one or two uses. It may seem difficult to spread out the life of a tiny bottle, but it’ll last longer than you would expect. Using a small amount of any skincare sample size every day until it runs out is an excellent way to test how your skin reacts to the product, and if it benefits from it. This impact can’t be accomplished in a single-use in an attempt to see an instant change in one’s skin. Cleaning, conditioning, and repairing skin takes time, no product can magically fix any skin impurities in one go.

An easy way to reduce the cost of your ever-growing skincare routine is to use as many sample sizes as possible. Although most sample sizes come for free, a quick way to find a great new product is to purchase a travel sampler. In this sampler, an array of usually around 5-20 travel-sized items will come in it. This is a great opportunity to test out how a specific brand works for your skin without making the expensive commitment to one of their products and regretting it. These sample kits are usually $30 or less and often go on sale because they are seasonal or limited time offers. There’s a good chance you’ll like at least one of the items in the sampler, and if not, that’s better than buying the full-size product and having it sit on your vanity collecting dust.

I’ve been using the travel sampler technique for several years now and I’ve noticed a tremendous difference in my skincare routine. I have a diverse array of skincare brands in my collection that I believe the best target my skin types’ problems and keep them at bay. Although I try new products quite often, my collection of skin treatments are on the smaller side. Over the years I’ve gathered some classics and discovered new ones that I live by. It’s a lot of trial and error, but now I make fewer frivolous purchases on the newest skincare fads and only buy full-sized items when I need to restock my supply. Now I’m saving money and my skin has never looked better! Sample sizes can make all the difference in any girl’s skincare routine.
