7 Tips for Transitioning A Summer to Fall Wardrobe

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at URI chapter.

As the cool fall weather settles in, we all are reluctant to put away our summer wardrobe in exchange for heavy sweaters and riding boots. But the good news is that you don’t have to put them too far! There’s no reason for you to have to put away summer’s best pieces, so here’s a list of tips that can help you with that transition. Have fun experimenting with different looks and taking some fashion risks this fall!

1. Layer with sweaters.

Cardigans, pullovers, vests, oh my! There are plenty of options for adding items over typical summer wear to make you comfortable in the fall. Adding cardigans or sweaters will make your look more casual, which is perfect for class or to grab lunch in. A vest or blazer steps up your look a notch, and is great for a night out.

2. Experiment with accessories

Fall is a great time to break out your best scarves, jewelry, and hats. Pair your summer wear with accessories in fall tones such as burgundy, forest green, browns, and black (among plenty of others!). One of the most famous designers, Coco Chanel, said to “look in the mirror, and take one thing off” before leaving the house. Take this advice and try not to over-accessorize as not to take away from your whole outfit!

3. Wear neutrals year-round.

Black, white, gray, and nude are considered neural colors that are a staple for every wardrobe in every season. They’re easy to play around with, and are a great backdrop for seasonal jewelry and accessories. My recommendation would be to buy a complete outfit (a blouse with pants or a skirt, or just a dress) so that you can interchange these items in your wardrobe easily and stylishly!

4. Change your shoes.

Just a simple swap of shoes completely changes the tone of your outfit. Instead of sandals, invest in a pair of quality ankle boots, flats or oxfords. Each comes in so many different colors, patterns, and styles that there are no way you won’t find what you’re looking for! This simple switch will keep your look on trend for fall while still being comfortable for the trek around campus.

5. Invest in a leather jacket.

There are few things more classic than a cute summer dress paired with a leather jacket. You’ll be warm for the cool autumn days, while still rocking summer’s best colors and patterns. There are plenty of stores, such as H&M or Forever 21, which sell faux leather items for cheaper prices. If you’re looking for a bit more edge, you can find jackets with patches or different colors.

6. Hang on to those maxi dresses.

One of summer’s standard staples, the maxi dress is an easy transition with the changing season. They’re easy to style because of the simple shape and design. You can throw a sweater or t-shirt over the top, or tie up the bottom into a knot to make the dress shorter.  Shoe-wise, booties or flats can make the look casual or formal, depending on what you’re going for.

5. Add tights.

For skirts and shorts that you don’t want to pack away just yet, wearing tights underneath can elevate your look and make it weather appropriate. Tights come in many different patterns and textures that can fit any style or occasion. This look is more for later fall when the weather is colder.
