10 Things To Do On A Snow Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at URI chapter.

I’ve noticed two things since moving to New England: there are more Dunkin Donuts’ than I’ve seen in my entire life, and, the winters are way harsh.  So far, we’ve been blessed with three snow days and the cancellation emails will never get old.  Once the excitement of no classes simmers down, you may get bored being stuck inside all day.  Have no fear; the fun doesn’t have to end just because you can’t leave your dorm room.

1. Sleep.

Spending the entire day sleeping is the go-to plan. Stay up as late as you possibly can the night before the storm, so then you sleep in really late and use up most of your day.  Way to strategize!

2. Binge eat.

No, I will not walk to the dining hall in a blizzard.  Yes, I have pop tarts.  You do the math.

3. Pretend it’s not below freezing outside.

Look up pictures of beaches on Google or better yet, watch the Kardashian episodes where they go on vacations to Bora Bora and Greece.  Not only can you watch Kim have a mental breakdown when her diamond earring falls off in the ocean, but you can pretend that you’re right there with her.

4. Question why you don’t go to school in warmer weather.

First, receive Snapchat from friend in Miami tanning on the quad. Then, send one back wearing a ski mask and a parka ice-skating home from class. You get bonus points if you slip and catch it on video, too.

5. Put items in an online shopping cart that you will never actually purchase.

Urban Outfitters doesn’t need to know you aren’t giving them $1,000 for six items today.  This game gets more fun as the websites get more and more expensive.  Unleash your inner millionaire for the day and click “view prices highest to lowest.”

6. Use your room as a gym.

The gym is closed because of the snow, so utilize your surroundings.  For beginners, extend your elbow to reach for the remote control and apply pressure to buttons in order to operate television.  If you want the advanced version, find a fun Zumba video on YouTube and get to dancing!

7. Let your social media followers know that it is snowing and that you have a snow day.

If you don’t Instagram it, did it even snow? Try to get an artsy picture of the quad in its white powdery glory. Or, bundle up and walk down to the beach so you can #IMissSummer.

8. Catch up on homework.

There’s always that one professor who assigns work on a snow day so they don’t get behind.  To that, I say, “Show me where it says that in the syllabus!”

9. Catch up with your friends and family.

Call your mom so she can tell you about how she spent her morning icing the walkway so the mailman didn’t slip, fall, and file a lawsuit.

10. NETFLIX. Duh.

As if you were really planning on doing anything else. Watch an entire season of Vampire Diaries even though you told your best friend you’d never give in or watch a crime scene documentary on a triple homicide. If Netflix is the question, yes is always the answer.

11. Repeat list until snow is melted and the temperature is above a C average.  Good luck, Rams, it’s cold out there.

Jamie is a freshman Communication Studies major at the University of Rhode Island. While she is not mourning the loss of Chelsea Lately, she enjoys watching Saturday Night Live, taking Buzzfeed quizzes, or making the mistake of stalking Instagram food accounts while on an empty stomach. Sarcasm is her forte and she strongly believes in leggings and reality television; if she cannot be a Kardashian, at least she can write about them.
Sabrina is a senior at URI studying public relations. She is originally from MA but has found a home in the Ocean State. A peer mentor, sister of Kappa Delta sorority, and HC Campus Correspondent at URI, she loves being involved on campus. If she could describe herself in a few words, she would say she's a driven individual with a huge heart who's obsessed with all things fashion, music, and adventurous.
