The rapidly growing hip hop community has provided a vast amount of artists offering different stories and perspectives. One of the voices to appear in the last few years was Rincon’s Michael Acevedo, known by his name WowZa. However, after releasing his mixtape Broke But Unbroken in 2016 and making a few videos for his songs, Mistakes and No Race Better in 2017, the artist went back to the studio to work on the craft. Nevertheless, in early April, WowZa came back with a new SoundCloud page and a few new tracks where he shows some of his influences and versatility.

The latest tracks by WowZa demonstrate the variety of fields the artist is willing to explore. In the short, but to the point Don’t Bother Me, a dark boom-bap tune, he raps about his ambition to be “a rap star” while creating a dark atmosphere that would haunt listeners everywhere.

WowZa continues to explore dark sounds in the track Supreme Kai where he experiments with the type of dark trap music coming out of Florida by rappers like Pouya and $UICIDEBOY$. In it, he distorts his vocals in the chorus to bring the dark tone to full circle showing how he is willing to play around with different sounds as he searches for his own voice.

Meanwhile, in the very short Black Butterflys, the rapper uses a simple lo-fi boom-bap instrumental to, once again, demonstrate his lyricism in what feels like the introduction to a future project. Like the previous tracks, this one also covers the subject of insecurity, one that seems to be prevalent in the rapper’s work.

Puerto Rico’s independent art scene is constantly growing and providing a space for new artists of all backgrounds. In WowZa, one can find a young Rincon-based rapper who isn’t afraid to explore different sounds while still rapping about his personal problems, be they his ambitions or insecurities. While the three new tracks may not be very long, they still show the musician’s ability to jump into disparate soundscapes while giving it his own touch.
