What I Learned From Watching Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UPRM chapter.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is a successful Netflix series that follows the life of Kimmy, (Ellie Kemper) who was kidnapped and kept underground for 15 years. Although Kimmy has been through a lot, she has never stopped being a positive person with an upbeat attitude and there is much to be learned from her.

1. Never give up.

Kimmy was held captive in an underground bunker for 15 years and after leaving it, all she ever wanted was a normal life away from her past. Even as she struggled to make it in New York City, she didn’t give up and arduously fought for what she wanted.

2. Don’t change yourself to fit in.

Even though this is a commentary on white privilege and how it enables you to get farther in life easier than others, you should never change yourself to fit in. Jacqueline (Kimmy’s boss on the show) regrets leaving her family and denying her roots to go off to the city, get married, and be a trophy wife.

3. Trust your instinct.

Sometimes the best decisions are made without thinking too much. Trust yourself!

4. Confidence is everything.

Kimmy is a fairly confident person and her positive attitude helps her get through many tough situations. With this confidence in herself, she is sure good things will come into her life and she works hard enough to get to them. Confidence is a great quality to have that sometimes you gain with time and expirience, but if you do not possess it, fake it till you make it.

5. Enjoy the little things.

Sometimes we are so busy, we forget how blessed we are. Take some time to appreciate things that we often take for granted.

6. It’s what is inside that matters most.

If you don’t deal with your issues, no matter what you do with your clothes or your appearance, you won’t be happy.

7. Having a positive attitude can get you through anything.

Kimmy has a very positive outlook in life which helped her get through the trauma of being kidnapped for 15 years. Being positive can help you face and deal with tough situations in life, help you be okay with what is going on, and work harder to no longer be in that situation.

8.  If you take everything 10 seconds at a time, you can get through anything.

Life can be overwhelming and at times we forget to take it slow. Sometimes the best most productive decision we can make is to step away for a while and consider our choices.
