Scientists Madly In Love: Valentine’s Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UPRM chapter.

Him: Edgar I. Castro-Feliú

Age: 26

Major: M.S. Biology

Her: Raquel I. Quiñones Acosta

Age: 24

Major: Chemical Engineering

How did you guys meet?

EDGAR: We met through my brother, whose girlfriend is Raquel’s best friend. At first we didn’t talk much but we saw each other all the time at church and college. It was slow and she was shy, but then a wonderful chemistry bloomed between us.

How did he ask you to become his girlfriend?

RAQUEL: Finally, one random and I mean random day we had a picnic next to the beach where he asked me to be his girlfriend. After nodding a silent yes we shared our first sunset together as a couple. The rest as they say is history.

For how long have you been together as a couple?

Officially 2 months; unofficially 6

The best quality he/she has I never thought I would love and I do is:

EDGAR: Her sense of humor is very similar to mine making for very interesting chemistry. Also, her feet are pretty.

RAQUEL: He tends to see the good in life and people, something refreshing that compliments me and I love that about him. Also, you could wash clothes in his abs.(Both laught)

What do you admire the most of each other?

EDGAR: If I had to say I admire her tenacity. While she doesn’t always jump at a chore when motivated, she is nothing short of unstoppable.

RAQUEL: I admire the way he discusses a wide diversity of topics and his knowledge on such a wide array of them. This I would say is what drove me to him and is what makes him the most interesting person I know.

What is the grandest romantic gesture you have done for each other?

EDGAR: On my birthday I had pretty much the worse day in existence, there she showed up with a present; while she did give me a standard gift of two t-shirts, she also gave me a jar of candy. Mars, starburst, Milky way and Orbit gum. Writing in the jar with chalk that I was out of this world. A gesture that was childish in nature, but tugged the very strings of my heart. This was coupled with a note that had 98 hearts written in pen (Yes I counted the hearts) which I will always remember. It was something no one had ever taken the time to do for me. She gave me 98 more reasons to love her, other than being beautiful and interesting which makes 100.

RAQUEL: Edgar is super romantic. He has done so many beautiful things in such a small amount of time together, but the best and by far most unforgettable would be the cauliflower he gave me when a month had passed since we were official. I had casually mentioned I liked flowers so he creatively gifted me a cauliflower (with real flowers later of course) something that caused the probably most sincere laughter in my life. Funny and so beautiful, something that had never been done for me. His attention to simple details like that fill my soul.

What is the foundation of your relationship?

BOTH: Communication and Honesty. Love goes a long way but like the delicate flower it needs solid soil to grow. Communicating honestly isn’t always a picnic, but it sure does make you grow as a person.

If you could describe your partner in three words:

EDGAR: Caring, passionate and above all INTERESTING!

RAQUEL: Transparent, passionate, given.

Plans for Valentine’s Day?

BOTH: Guess we’ll have to wait and see… ;)

Word of advice for starting couples:

Talk… but more important than talking… Listen. Just sharing information goes a long way.
